Huge egt change with turbo swap

Hello,
Got a question for you all about my drastic egt change I got with a turbo swap. I've had a 64.5/80/.80 charger for about 2 years or so. Under normal driving I see 6 - 800 egt highest, if I put my foot in it, maybe it would hit 1200. Being a 80mm turbine wheel it's a bit laggy so wanted to go with another charger. I talked to company about what size charger he thought would be best for my truck. He sold me a 63/68/.80 charger. Put it on the truck and under normal driving I was seeing 1000-1500 and if I got on it 2000+ egts. When I called them back to see if they could help me out, guy told me there's nothing wrong with the charger and that i have a boost leak. Does that sound like something that would happen or did they sell me the wrong turbo? I'm pretty sure they sold me the wrong turbo. What are your thoughts?

Check for boost leaks. Probably the intercooler is corroded and leaking at the bottom or a boot is bad. I run the same charger, 600 to 700 cruising 70 on flat ground. My p pump is rowdy and wont hit 2k degrees wot.

If the only thing you changed was the actual turbocharger and you had a wild EGT jump with a similarly sized charger, then I would double check your work around the turbo.

Checked everything. Put my old turbo back on after a couple days and egt's dropped

Guy tried to tell me it was perfectly fine because race trucks see those numbers all the time. I told him this isn't a race truck, it's a daily, and the engine won't last like this. That's when he told me to give it more fuel lmfao

I've put my 64.5/80 back on and the egt's dropped back down. I'll definitely pressure test the intercooler. Just don't understand what's going on and how the egt's are higher with a quicker spooling charger

Overall boost numbers are about the same between the two chargers. My current gauge(measured in intake) only goes to 40psi so I cant say what their maximums are. But I can peg the gauge no problem. I do see a couple psi higher at cruising speed in the 63/68 vs 64.5/80

i have the exact same setup as you..my truck during reg cruise at about 65 is close to 900...accelerating away from a redlight for instance can easily go over 1300...just the same hrvp..close to same inj also...it tows my 13000 lb toyhauler at 1200 and there hasn't been anything I can do to get it to run cooler...its a bw 63 68 14...it was worse with my silver bullet but its still not where id like to...I lockout overdrive a lot..mine will easily make 50 psi boost...cruise about 5-8 lbs boost...barely off the peg...

Idk what the deal is. In my mind a quicker spooling charger should bring the egts down since your getting more cool air. But its proving to be opposite. Glad I'm not the only one with this issue

Just curious, how does it feel seat of the pants wot between the 2?

Do you run the stock type cast 90 elbow then a boot on the discharge?

Boost leak test. Do that before you do anything else. Try to test near the boost you run at. Be careful! It can get sketchy over 20psi. But you will start finding all kinds of things leaking.

Aside from the 63/68 spooling quicker, they feel about the same. Still have the 90° to the intercooler pipe with 2 new boots

I wonder if the smaller 63 mm compressor wheel is moving that much less air causing the higher cruise egt?
