Just bricked an ECM, I think

Tried to flash an 07.5 chassis cab truck. It said ok to flash, but I didn't know the customer had an ECM replaced last year. Pretty sure it had the newer boot blocker. Won't do anything now. I can connect with 7.5 scan, and it shows trouble code U1601, data missing/corrupted.

Any ideas?

Can't help you on that, but I have ran across ECMs with no information on them before.

Earlier this week, I was verifying that a few 849 ECMS I have were communicating with my EFI Live tuner and I ran across a 2006 '1975 one that had an unknown VIN and O/S.

I'm wondering if a dealer can recover yours for you?

Mark.

I've never been able to bring one back from that state... with a dealer tool or aftermarket stuff

We're going to mess with it tomorrow or the next day, but I have a feeling we're going to be hanging an ECM on it. I'm going to bring 3 or 4 with me. I'll try to resuscitate the one that's on it, but I've been down this road a few times... I'm afraid she's a brick (at least to me or anybody in my circle of contacts)

Okay, I have one from a 2008 that appears to have been a replacement through Chrysler.
What's the chances that it also has the killer boot block? How does one tell prior to bricking it?

Mark.

it's probably got it on it. There are ways around it. If you have a recovery file, you can back-date it. But you have to do so BEFORE trying to read/flash.

I would then do a complete OS flash with a known-clean base file vs. a read/modify job.

I'd be interested in that ECM, Mark :D

I was just messing around with the 2006 5.9 ECM I mentioned in post #2 and figured what the heck.
I had recently downloaded and modified (shut off the SKIM and other items) another ECM's O/S and re-flashed it, so I attempted to flash this one with the modified O/S and lo and behold, it apparently took it!

The only thing I can think of is the '1975 one was an old boot block, plus this it had NO VIN presenting, which is probably why it didn't tell me I needed a licence.

Unless I'm missing something?
All I know is it presents with a VIN and an O/S, when it didn't before my experimenting and it shows DTC codes, like it should on a bench harness, when it didn't before.

For the record, it was presenting the exact same errors as the 6.7 one above, P0161, Data Missing/Corrupted ($11).

I think I got stupid lucky.:D

One thing that is interesting to note, the Part Number on the O/S I flashed into this '1975 ECM was from a '7149 ECM, yet it retained the '1975 Part Number, but with the '7149's VIN and the modified O/S.

No wonder people go nuts working with these things.

Mark.

If it's the 'updated bootblock' you can read and save the file. When you open that file with V8 software, click on F3: Calibration and look at the bootloader revision #. If it's 1000601 you have the updated bootblock. If this is what you have, shoot me your email address and I'll send you the 'patch' scheduled for the next public release which will allow you to tune the vehicle

Cheers

It's boot loader Rev 1000500. Like scooter said, nothing I tried worked on this thing. It said ok to flash in 7.5 and V8, so I never thought twice about a 07.5 having an issue. Turns out, customer had an ECM replacement last year by a shade tree shop.

It read fine, built the tune and after attempting to flash it locked up. 7.5 scan would connect, no vin showed, but I could read the U1601 code out of it. Attempted several known good tunes along with original one but nothing worked.

Do all the new ECM's have the boot blocker. Since mine was replaced by dealer three weeks ago I have no exhaust brake and lack of power. They told me was because erg deleted. Any truth to that?:charger:

There one tunner that will remove it for good looks like I got buy one now cause efi can't get around my new. ECM on 07.5 after 1800 for ECM and new vin for my efi still nothing they tryed lots times but there only one way fix it for good !

If you read my post 3 weeks before yours you will see EFILive does offer a solution. This solution is available via request ahead of our next public release.

If you read your file with EFILive, confirm you are running the 601 bootblock, send me an email and I'll send you the files.

You will be required to be running either September 12 or September 29 software for my files to work.

An additional requirement is that you are using FlashScan V2 for tuning. If you are using AutoCal, your tuner will need to make the request to me so that they can then 'link' that file to their FlashScan to work with your AutoCal.

Cheers
