Honestly, the wheel well, fender area is a cleaner and drier place to draw air from. So long as you have a quality filter, any dust that blows into the engine compartment, will not get into the engine.

There is a second much larger opening in the fender between the fender and liner about 5 ft off the ground, no water is getting in there. I put a duct on the second one because it was pulling dirt right off the tire as you drive. If I decide I like it I'll be replacing the 3 in ducting with 4 in aluminum tubing with a trap for water and debris.
