Moved from a 2012 to a 13, hope it was the right move?!

IMG_0553.JPG

So I went from a 2012 to a 13. My 12 was the best truck I've had by far but the 3200 mile oil changes and poor fuel economy we're wearing on me. I know the numbers may not be a huge jump but every little bit helps. My main concern is the 13 and up models seem to generate more CEL's. My 12 never did, had it 3 years and never went back to the dealer.

Good news is my 13 has a MaxCare warranty for another 40k miles or till 2021 so if needed that should help.

With my luck the dash will light up like a Christmas tree on the ride home. Hope to pick it up early this week.

Purchased it private party sale so I got a pretty darn good deal as well. Guy performed all maintenance, all fluids changed at 60k, brand new tires and ball joints last month. Checked the Carfax and showed a good maintenance schedule and didn't seem to show any extra trips for cels or issues.

What is the difference on the service schedule to have a reason to buy a 2013 over a 2012?

Just curious

Well my oil changes were every 3k on my 12, I believe the 13+ Calls for 15k miles or per evic. Next is just mileage, most have reported much better fuel economy on the SCR trucks vs the pre SCR. It all adds up.
Lastly I got the truck for a great price and the fact it has a higher legal towing weight, my side job may require towing a larger machine around every now and then.

If it runs anything like my 17 3500 DRW with Aisin you won't be sorry. And it knocks down 16mpg on average driving 5mi to work daily. Has done 19.7mpg on a 227mi trip averaging 52mph.

MPG are hand calculated with 1900mi on clock

Picked it up last night. Drove the same route 2 days prior with my 12, mainly highway ranging from 45-70mph. It was a small sample size of only 54 miles but it still shows a trend. Im not even going to put up what the lie o meter said because it's ludicrous! If this 13 can really get anywhere to close to what it is saying I've changed my stance and I'm a fan of 3.42 gears and CAD.

It does show no doubt that their is the possibility for me to save some money at the pump, how much time will tell.

For the love of god, do not wait 15k miles to change the oil on that truck. Nothing changed from 12-13 to justify any warrant in service routines.
The best thing you could have done "for your pocket" was make your 12 "competition use only" and enjoyed the power, fuel economy, and the truck not having chit oil, fuel economy, and problems.

I loved my 3.42's in my 2010....

But to trade trucks because of a service interval in a manual is a bit over the top. We change all our diesel oil at 5K miles or 150 hours, whichever comes first with our idle time when jump starting and compressor duties. I wouldn't even think about changing oil at 15K in a 6.7L even with the DEF. 7500 miles maybe, wouldn't bother me too much if you aren't working it.

The most I would ever run a diesel to is 7,000 miles with a good secondary filtration system. I know synthetic brands say you can extend and get more miles, but it's not exactly the greatest idea. Especially when your dealing with a fairly expensive motor to work on and replace.

We regularly run our big trucks to 10K, but when they hold 10 gallons you have a better supply of oil. Most run them longer than that with no problems to speak of.

All of our new tractors have a 400 hour service interval unless running more than a 10% blend of Bio-Diesel, mainly because the engine company is unsure of any long term effects with that. Better safe than sorry. Our engines do not run any secondary filtration, but we have been DEF without DPF/EGR since 2008...without DPF/EGR it keeps the oil very clean. We just switched to light cEGR in 2016, so we will see how that goes as we get more units out.

Just FYI,
Chris

I see trucks day in and day out... the egr trucks TRASH the oil. My suggestion is 5k.

I guess I forgot to add, that my 2010 also added a gallon of oil every 5K....fuel from the DPF process I assume getting to the oil. Dealer said they'd never seen that before...

Tuner solved that issue, and the EGR trashing the oil. I still change it at 5K

I guess, but it would be a gallon overfull every time, then with the tuner, stay right where you fill it...even at 150K miles.

Ok let me clear a few things up IIRC the manual says 15k or 400 hours. I would never go near that long, but I will run an oil analysis at 5k and go from there.
Delete is not an option for me, my area has had diesel emissions before and may again. Annual inspection includes a visual check. Lastly my job is not tolerant of any type of run in or rules violation where PD is involved.
I wanted a 13+ since they came out so I waited for a great deal, this was it. A 13 with a warranty with all maintenance completed for $30k is pretty good around here. I got more for my 12 so I lowered my overall truck debt by a couple grand.
If I can squeeze out a few more miles per gallon and miles between oil changes it's icing on the cake.

I also had a 2500 and wanted a 3500 DRW with an 8', missed it since I sold my 06 DRW. Now I have what I need for the long haul and this should be my last truck for a long while.

So I towed my dump trailer today, forgot how good a Dually long bed is for towing. Honestly forgot my trailer was back there a few times.
Mileage even towing is stupid, but again I want a bigger sample size before I get all giddy. The only drawback is under a load I had to romp her pretty good from a stop with the 3.42. My 12 was 3.73 and my 5.9 was 4.10 so I think I'm just used to a truck that leaps out of the hole. That said this truck is legally rated for 5k-lbs more that either of those so I think it's just something I have to get used to. I never felt it was lacking power I just had to get deeper in the throttle before she moved, once rolling though man forget about it.
13 FTW!
