The actuators are different. Internally, externally, and the connector is different. However, cummins sells an adapter harness for the newer style actuators for the older trucks as that is all they sell now. Internally the turbo is slightly different. Twin piston rings on the exhaust side of the newer units to aid in oil control and keeping exhaust out of the bearing housing. The backing plate was redesigned as well. Will it mean much to You? No. For the most part. You will have to utilize the newer style actuator if you intend to use the older style turbo. The sector shaft is slightly different and sometimes can interfere with actuator installation when using a newer style turbo with an old style actuator but in your case you are fine as the newer actuators retrofit fine to the older turbos. The other difference is a pair of filters on the backside of the nozzle assembly but that shouldn't be a big issue as those oftentimes become more of a problem than a help.
