68RFE Temp Issue

I have a 2011 Mega Dually 4wd with 180,000 miles on the stock tranny. Truck has been deleted and tuned since 5k miles, first with mini-max then EFI live ever since. Have about 100k miles towing 18k lb. 5th wheel. Just stated to get tranny temps climbing when in slow and go traffic. Once at highway speeds the temps are perfect, but stop and go they will climb up to as high as 230 deg. Once back on the highway they will drop right back down to the 170-180 range. Coolant temp stays right at 190-195 with a 190 stat.

Thoughts on what the issue could be and also what kind of recommendations for Phoenix area trusted tranny shops or trusted tranny shops in general?

Thanks

Is the coolant thermostat bypassed? Or still in play? Seen plenty of them hang up and fry trans.

It's my understanding that the 2010 - 2011 didn't come with this from the factory. That being said, I have not checked to see if there is one or not.

Thanks, I did see these the other day and tried to do a little research on them but most everyone with a 2010 or 2011 that looked to the bypass couldn't locate one to replace. I believe that this would be up closer to the fuel filter area along the driver side of the engine. I will go out later after work and see if I can spot it.

Just confirmed that I do not have a TBV. Traced the cooler lines from the tranny case all the way to the cooler and there is nothing connected to these lines.

I read some have a thermostat in the side of the cooler. My guess is that's your problem or the separator plate is leaking on the valve body, weak spring in the pump or its getting ready to shit out a planetary pin.

This^^
It should be integrated into the front mount fluid to air exchanger.

Just curious. Has the fluid and filter been changed in the 180,000 miles at any point ?

who changes transmission fluid...thats like rears fluid..good forever unless it leaking out....thats just a waste of money..makes a mess and a pita too

my 13 does (did) have the thermal bypass. However before I removed the valve and installed a deep pan my temps towing a 15K 5er were always in the range your seeing now. 170-180 cruising and would get up to 220-230 on a cool-hot day towing in stop and go traffic or going slow thru the mountains. Would come down right away once cruising again. Thought these were pretty standard temps while towing
