Cummins Carillo rods
Anyone tried drilling the tops of them to get some oil to the wristpin? Seems like it would be a good idea. Getting ready to put a set in and thinking about poking a hole in the top of them first.

I think what you're referring to is on the cap end for oil flow. I plan on doing that for sure. .040 off each side of the cap should do it.

Most people are taking .015 off a side.
I took .020 off a side.

Does D&J do this on their rods? I've asked different people including some pullers and they think I'm wrong about milling the cap sides.

Yes they do. Not the entire side of the cap, but there is a spot machined for oil to get away.

In reference to the original question, some people drill (EDM maybe?) a galley down the length of the rod to lube the pin. That's the route I'd look into

That would be my preference, but the web in these rods is not thick enough for me to feel comfortable doing that.

I've seen several sets that have two holes drilled on the top for such a purpose, probably about a 45° angle from centerline on either side. I think that would be a pretty easy maneuver for a hobby machinist/farmer to pull off

I ordered .080 longer Wagler rods a couple months ago and still haven't seen them yet. But reasoning I went for them is they do have a lube hole in the wrist pin end and caps come already clearanced.

D&J's X beam rod is drilled through the center from the rod bearing to the wrist pin to "pressure lube" the wrist pin. This is a lot different then just drilling a hole in the cap.

On the rod cap machining for oil to escape, are you guys doing .020 on each side or one side only? Would it be better to do more on one side versus both sides?

The last set of CR Carrillo rods I installed had 2 holes at the wrist pin side, at about 45 degrees from the top.

Bringing this one back. My Carrillo’s (.080” longer) have a heavy 45 degree chamfer cut into them. Taking .050 per wouldn’t even get rid of the chamfer so is relieving necessary? Is this a new design thing on their end?

The chamfer should be there to clear the radius on the crank journal (It's more exaggerated than what it needs). As long as you take material away from the thrust surface of the rod cap you should be fine.
