New build 16.4L V8 generation 3 engine.

With the latest engine we are going to be a lot more experimental.
The cylinders went from a 127mm bore to a 130mm bore adding 800cc volume to the engine.
The connecting rods are made from hi density billet material and are a bit longer than the OE ones to reduce tress on the liners.
On this engine we use full steel pistons and we machined the top to get more valve clearance so we can run a more radical cam profile.

Engine is ready to go to the paint shop next week and later on we hope to fit new hi pressure injectors and swap the engine so we can test it on the last pull of this year.

It made a great picture for there barbeque flyer. The name of the semi is Murphy’s Law and the team is very optimistic about building a new engine and chance is we going to use some of our know how on building a V8 to help out where we can.

Yes we can take passengers but you need to wear a coverall and arms and legs have to be covert with closing as well.

Some may think is this save seeing the flames on the picture. Well in this case 2 pistons where ripped out clean making it possible to inject fuel into the oil sump that had some gaping holes in it throwing out flames like mad but after the power was cut to the injection pumps the fire was gone. Must say this is also the first time that is goes wild like this as most of the time you get a small oil of fuel fire that can be put out with a bucked of water that stand around the track.

Yesterday we ended the pulling season for 2015 with a very good clay track in Boerdonk.

It was also the first time on the track with the new build 16.4L V8 engine.
One part of me is happy that have the engine running and did two runs with no engine damage but we seem the have a cam timing or fuel delivery problem in one side of the engine as the AFR is way lower on the drivers side and it’s clearly that the engine smokes more from one stack so we got a bid of homework to sort this out bust for now the new build engine makes about the same power as the old 15.6L engine.

Looks like we got 4 month to sort things out and build new stuff like exhaust manifold and maybe change the turbochargers as well and maybe even find the time to dyno the new engine.

A bit of homework called engineering. Working on things taking it step by step to build a big bore engine.

Loads of things to be done in order to reduce more weight. OE wire loom, well what it’s left of it will be taken out and replaced by the bear minimum needed to run things.

Today we had the Pre Proloog Dakar. A small rally event on a Motto Cross track the present the Le Dakar Rally teams to the public.

20 semi trucks are going to run this Le Dakar rally begin next year and this pre proloog event gives a good picture on speed and performance and the truck we build is competitive with factor build trucks like MKR, MAN and Iveco FTP able to select a hi gear due to hi torque from the engine and able to run max power over a wire RPM range not having to shift gear and able to control traction a lot easer with your right foot. Also the DEP in combination with the exhaust break work very well as the break response is more direct in response and the ECU applies this breaking if needed taking the break command from break peddle and RPM load combination.

Kinda off topic, but what brand of tire are these on this truck?

A load of work is done in the last week. The radiator is moved to get a better load balance and a new wire loom has been made as the old one was to heavy.

Next we hope to get started on the new 18.4L project going from a 15.6L to 18.4L so the first step is to machine an old engine block and find out what will be left on wall thickness on the engine block.
As a part of this process we also going to put a load of engine part into a 3D simulator and from this we can simulate things like cam profiles in relation to lift all the way up the piston dome development and calculating CR and so on.
Camshafts need to be addressed as well as we did not only get one cam way out of spec on the new 16.4L build but it’s clear we need to rethink how to get more air into the engine and we agree on no compromises this time and as a part of this change is we need to redo the pistons from the 16.4L as well to get valve clearance on the exhaust valves.

Things are well on their way for the new Scania 18.4L engine. Yesterday the machine shop machined one liner hole in the block so it can accommodate the big bore liner. Next thing up is the measure wall thickness on various spots next to the drilled hole and work out if the engine bock still has the structural strength.

Also we now have a smaller bore prototype CNC machined steel piston that going to be used in a 5.5L Supersport tracktorpuller.
The weight difference between a alloy and steel piston are minimal as we used hi density material able to skin down the piston still maintaining a load more strength than alloy using a 3D simulator software. Will this be the next generation piston for the pulling sport? It needs less piston clearance and will be hard to melt and the piston can be build compacter having the piston pin closer to the top of the piston so a longer connecting rod can be used.

We get the first S300SX-E in this week and we are going to used some on the Sport Class Semi trucks that have to run 2 turbochargers as this is the standard configuration for some V8 and V10 engines and to limit things they have to use a 55mm inlet restriction as if you run one turbocharger you have to use a 70mm inlet restriction.
We going to use some on compact diesel as well and please do not call them garden pullers as there are more miniature prostock tractors..
