Tranny issues, lets hear some thoughts

well this is my first post here guys and gals. i was sent here by a dirtyblonde girl that seems to frequent your boards. heres my story.....

well about 9 or 10 months ago (10 thousand miles), i had a goerend tranny put in my truck. everything was fine up until a couple weeks ago when i was in the drive thru and when i let off the brake to let my truck idle forward, it acted like it was in nuetral and didnt move under its own power. so i gave it a little bit of throttle and it just revved up. so i sat there and about a second or two later, it acted like it slipped back into gear and was fine.

well this has happened a dozen or more times since then and also came out of lockup on its own going down the interstate about a week back, but hasnt done that since.

so today i dropped the pan and found my fluid was a nasty brownish purple color and smelled burned as heck. (see pictures below)

so i called dave and talked to him and he wasnt the most straight forward guy saying exactly what he thought was wrong (which over the phone, thats expected), but to me, it sounds like i ate up the torque convertor due to the lack of chunks of material in the pan (which would mean some bad clutches or some kind of catostrophic failure)

anyway, this is turning into a novel. lets hear some opinions on what you guys think it is and what i should do. mind you, daves shop is a solid 6 hours from my house so stopping by is kind of tough to do.

heres some pictures of the metal i found on the magnet, it was about 1/8th inch deep and in the second pic, you can see the fluid color

That's the first I've heard of Dave not being "straight" with someone.

By description, he may not be sure what might have failed, or if anything failed.

The Debris you've got there is pretty normal for these trucks. Mine has looked like that every time I changed it, and that's around 15,000 miles. The first change was a little worse due to the typical "you can only be so clean" when rebuilding...well anything.

I'd change the fluid and filter and see how it goes. If I had to make a guess....Your issues is more on the electrical side. (Don't remember what they all do off the top of my head...it's been a long day with only 3 hours of sleep last night!)

Here is the breakdown of what is applied when:

Reverse: The Front Clutch, Rear Band and the Direct Clutch are applied

First: The Rear Clutch, the Overrun clutch, the Direct Clutch, and the Overrun Sprag

Second: Front Band, Rear Clutch, Direct Clutch and the Overrun Sprag

Third: Front Clutch, Rear Clutch, Direct Clutch and the Overrun Sprag

Fourth: Front Clutch, Rear Clutch, and Unapplies the Direct clutch and applies the Overdrive Clutch.

So to have NO forward movement at all...I'd have to guess That the rear clutch did not apply, which is applied in ALL forward movements.

For the Converter to fail to the point of not operating.....Well I've never heard of such a thing. I've heard of them failing inturnally and killing a vehicle comming to a stop, but never failing to move a vehicle.
