Turbo suggestions for modded 12V

I love my modified HX35s but you have to take them with a grain of salt. They are fine for drag racing, towing, etc... but your engine appears to be a bit more than a stock turbo can handle. You will not see 700+ out of any modified stock turbo unless drive pressure and turbo life are not an issue to you. There just isn't enough area on the thrust collar to support crazy drive pressures for long.

Need a power goal but an S400 frame is hard to beat. Its a big jump in driveability compared to the modified stocker. They are versatile and can be upgraded down the road as goals change as well though. Not trying to talk you out of one of my modified stock units but for your needs I would prefer something more robust hanging on it. An S300 may get it done, but again you are playing with something that has it's limits depending on your goals.

If I'm towing with a 12v, I don't want anything bigger than 60mm....BEST towing charger I've ever had was a 58ET,68/14 with a close second being the 60ET/68/14 I run on a 24v VP truck.

Now, for playing, these chargers will only do a sold 450-475hp before being too hot to control temps.

I've never found a 62mm wheel that I could tow much of anything and still keep temps where I wanted with a 12v...maybe the newer wheels are better.

I only ever had one big frame charger I even attempted to tow with, and it was an HE551V variable geometry unit. I could tow with it, but it wasn't nice. The ball bearing GT4294R wouldn't tow at all at 565hp, but it ran well otherwise.

So, if you really don't intend to tow much, or often, go with a big frame unit....if you want it to act anywhere near driveable towing without huge smoke clouds, I would say to stay small frame.

12v's are not CR trucks...you can't have giant chargers and make big power, then turn it down and tow and still move enough air to spool chargers. Unless charger technology has changed enough to make the big wheels act like little ones...which I doubt.

BTW, a Valet switch is your friend on a 12v....even with a well tuned AFC.

I totally agree. We had a couple 12v trucks that towed awesome with 64/71/12's, but the 62s generally were better, and the 60s were most versatile. It's hard to beat a set of compounds for towing though. Just don't get real huge and it'll be fine. :rockwoot:

The 71mm wheel in a 12 housing would probably be ok, I had 14's because that's all anyone used to want to sell years ago.

I always wanted to try a 60ET/68/13SS but never got to
Chris

I'd give Will and Todd at PDD a call, sounds like your looking to stay with a single but with all the testing they've done I bet you'd get a good idea what would work with the mods you have.

Yes definitely want to stay single turbo right now because I don't have the money to do a set like i would like a 63 over S475 or 80 so something similar.

I had thought about calling Will, but at the same time I'm not going to be purchasing right this minute so I don't want to bug him too much.

I always wanted to try that one too but the price tag always stopped me. Always too much other stuff I needed worse. Haha

Ok throw the towing aspect out the window hell after all I have another truck I "CAN" install a gooseneck hitch in.

What turbo is going to make great power, be fun to drive(i.e. not a laggy pig), and hold up to some drag strip abuse?

I think the new 62mm SXE w/.70ar gated housing is one of the best street/daily driver/towing single turbos for a 12v at sub 4000' elevation. Great power, great spoolup, minimal surging, etc. If you have 2k to spend, the 61mm Ball Bearing Garrett turbo we offer spools faster, makes similar power, and offers the reliability of a ball bearing center.

For a 12v drag truck, the s400's do have larger more robust internals, but we honestly see just as many blown up S400 chargers as S300 chargers meaning you can't abuse either charger and expect it to survive forever. We've had a few customers with excellent drag strip results with their 12mm pump'd 12valves and single 369sx-e turbo both with the smaller .80ar t3 gated housings, and the larger .91AR T4 housings.

I don't think I'd have enough power with the 369sxe single on my Junker to run 10's, but it definitely has 11.50's in it. If your drag strip goals are faster than mid to high 11's fuel-only, I think you should go bigger than a 369sx-e.

Thank you in for your input Will I greatly appreciate it!

Looking at the 369sx-e on your website there are 2 T4 options.... one is labeled HX40.... the other is not labeled but is considerably cheaper. What style of downpipe does that housing take?

I like the price tag of the 369sx-e with that T4 .91 housing, the machined cover for the 2nd gen elbow, and the oil adapter. Just curious what a downpipe is going to run me?

gtx3582?

I'd throw a power number you'll be happy with in the mix as well. At some point you're going to have to have a X sized turbo to make Y power. That being said, there have been some small setups I was impressed with. Saw a S363 make 570 on a 12v which I thought was pretty good.

I agree with your thought process... at what power range do I have to start worrying about the stock rods? The bottom end was completely balanced, but nothing special was done to my stock rods. I have fuel and air for quite a bit of potential power I guess I would like to be somewhere around 800RWHP.

I'd be leaning toward an sxe369 or s467 for good power, decent manners(for size), and inexpensive. Not much for towing turbos, but could get you by in a pinch. Different application, but I'm going to try a 67mm he351ve upgrade on my 6.7 soon. Hope it doesn't blow up. I'd also be looking for a fixed BW if I didn't want to attempt to keep my exhaust brake.

800 with a decently streetable single will be tough in a 12v. I did 700 on fuel with a 467 and 834 on spray. This was stock lift pump and no idea what FP at WOT was...so there may have been more in it, but I felt like it was pretty tapped out. badass little charger though.

If you were interested in how the BW S369 and S467 compare, here is some information we gathered, overall power was very similar.

I was just throwing a number out there, but yes I see what you are saying as well. I have a AD II 165 on the truck so FP won't be a issue for sure.
