NV 4500, how strong and how do they shift?
due to the fact that finding a NV5600 is so hard right now. im wondering how the NV 4500's hold up to high HP and drag racing?

autos are for drag racing
manuals are for drag things around
4500 has a slow shift to 3rd but you would be starting off there anyways
and there is a fix for it too...
5th gear nut falls off but i dont think that is gonna happen drag racing
stock 1.25 is plenty strong if you ask me but some guys break em
might have more to do with driving style than weak parts
but if you want to go quick drag racing you have to have an auto
period
i doubt you will ever see a 4500 make a 9 second pass
maybe with a gear vendors behind it and a professional driver
but not just 3rd 4th n 5th with you or me behind the wheel
no way
how quick are you trying to go????????

well that doesnt sound like its for me.
i understand that auto's are for racing. but i have already gone a 12.92 with my 6 speed. i want to get low 12's or high 11's before its all said and done. what is the strongest six speed out there? Jeff Prince maybe you can chime in?

they may have changed the design but it used to be you could not let off the throttle until you were in high gear or it would break a sprag, unless ofcourse you got the clutch in in time - but even if you did an aborted pass would usually hurt the tranny. you had to take it apart and check it. thats how lenco's still are as far as i know...
its been a while so dont try to take that to the bank

ps - even tho i am not exactly certain about how they work i am sure that liberty is still top of the line when it comes to drag racing with a manual
itsa clutchless transmission - you only use the clutch for the launch - from there you just pull a lever ever time the lite comes on
talk about fun...

I'v always been told the nv4500 shifts faster than the 5600. Was told the 5600 isnt made to speed shift and doesnt like it very well. This was from a clutch builder so I would imagine he knew what he was talking about. Could be wrong though.

Idk about starting out in 3rd in a nv4500, the gears seem to be farther apart than in an nv5600. However, they shift faster, and hold the abuse much better than a 5600. Plus, not having that extra gear will help as well

My '99 with the NV4500 shifts much faster than my 04.5 with the NV5600.

True.
Accually neither trans was designed to drag race . 45's shift easier as the 56 is really a true truck trans.
Want a great upgrade to to the fifth nut failure . Beef up the input with a 5600 shaft from South Bend , then visit this site.
Home and get the TorqKing shaft.

My truck has about 20 1/4 mile passes and the 3rd gear synchros are starting to show signs of eminent failure. The shift from 2nd to 3rd is brutal on NV4500's. My truck has gotten so bad, so quickly, I have decided to not race it anymore.
I love to drag race but have to agree, auto's are for drag racing, manuals are for towing.
By the way, my tranny was completely rebuilt 20K miles ago with new mainshaft, secondary shaft, bearings, synchros, seals, etc. My tranny is overfilled 1 qt with the recommended syntorq synthetic gear oil. Tranny has been smooth as silk until a few months ago when I started drag racing at the track.

The straw that broke the camel's back was a few weeks ago when I was lined up with a low 10 second camaro. I wanted to at least beat him to the 60' mark so I revved up to 3800 rpm for a wicked 2nd gear 4x4 launch. I cut a better light and about 5' into my run the tranny popped out of gear! I thought for sure I had broken something major in the drivetrain and panicked for a few seconds as it coasted till I realized it was out of gear. I still cut a 2.6 second 60' time even though 55' of it was coasting.
I don't know if tranny case flexed or if my 2nd gear is a little worn, all I know is it's not worth it to beat on a 1500 dollar transmission when an auto can go at least on second faster with the same horsepower.

Auto's are superior to manuals because they supply constant torque the entire pass, manuals don't when you press the clutch to change gears. They were designed to hold stock power and will usually sheer gears under higher amounts of stress. The manual seems to shed the lining off the third synchro in GM and Dodge apps for some reason, regardless of the oil used. Both have pro's and con's, drag racers prefer autos and sled pullers seem to prefer manuals. I prefer auto's because you can build boost before the start of either event.

I prefer an auto for the simple rebuilds. All it really takes is about 6 cans of brake clean and $100 in clutches.
Then agian if I new how to rebuild manuals I would not be so biased.

you have to take a torch to one of the bearings or inside the trans or you will not be able to take it apart

i mean i see all these guys useing the manual transmission to sled pull and do it very well. if they can hold up to that abuse a few passes down a race track shouldnt phase them at all. there has to be a manual trans to hold it at the race track. the reason i want to do it with a manual is because anyone can go out there and race a auto. i mean my 71 duster is an auto, but really a retard could make a pass in it. pull this three times without letting off the fuel. no fun there. how many guys can do it with a manual and do it well? not many!

Sled pullers aren't shocking the gears by dumping the clutch when they shift. They usually slip the clutch to some extent upon take off and accelerate from there. Drag racers bang the gears each shift and usaully end up breaking stuff at some point. Who cares if it's auto or manual, spanking a gasser sports car in a diesel pickup ROCKS!
