I also can completely bury my 1600* egt gauge at full spool, with the 160 pump as well as this 180. I feel like that shouldn't be this easy since I've gone down a size in injectors and up 4mm on the turbo.

In cab video of my 11.8 pass. You can see the thing pulling all the way up to about 3800rpm before defueling and then the late shift. 80-85 psi all the way down the track. (Boost gauge upper left, EGT upper middle, temporary drive gauge lower middle).

Valve lash was all where i left it. Adjusted it out to .010 and .020 anyways. No real difference.

So i closed the MWE groove all the way and that left the turbo harder to spool, dropping boost after shifts, and a max of 45psi. Openener the groove up to about .115 and now it seems more responsive and boost is back up to 60psi with limited boost drop after the shift. I have the front of the MWE groove right at about the fins, so i can’t really make it any wider right; or i would lose ALOT of efficiency... or am i not understanding that correctly?

No..... with the 60mm WH1C. Stock exhaust housing. Bored wastegate on spring, about 85psi boost, and 100psi drive.

You have to think maybe the secondary is the issue.

Yea. I believe it’s a big possibility. But what exactly do i need to change? I’m actually at the track today. Gonna run it with the VGT pretty much all the way closed. I’ll let you know how it goes.
It’s also a possibility I’m not shifting late enough. Before i did all the valvebody mods, i was having issue with laying on the governor for a while before the shift. Maybe i over compensated in my shift table... I’ll raise shift points and see what happens.

With your timing and setup I bet peak torque is probably under 3400, no reason to shift higher than that.

I’m starting to wonder if the nozzle is stuck and the clamping arm is rotating on the actuator shaft as i crank down the preload on it. I had this issue a while back where the little veins were bent outward and jammed against the receiver plate they are supposed to slip in.
But still. If the HE351ve housing was pretty loose right now, shouldn’t i be able to get it to spool later in the rpm and combined with the S475 put out more than 55psi of boost? Also, yes; boost is still down from when i started this thread. Only changes have been tightening up the VGT and then closing the MWE groove, then promptly bringing it back out to about where i thought it was before.

Let me get this straight, you added a little more turbo and took out some fuel with a smaller injector, and now you can’t figure out why it doesn’t run as good as before? I see that your trying to make minor cheap adjustments, but I’d say put a good injector in it

So you’re thinkin i don’t have enough fuel to push the turbo? I’ll be 100% honest, I’ve heard that said before and it’s kinda lost on me. My WOT EGTs are about where they were with the 5x18s and i have a good dark black haze all the way don’t the track.... anyway of knowing I’m for sure under fueled besides just buying different injectors? What if i racked the barrels on this 180? I can’t afford to send it out to Seth yet.

Do you have the old Scheid injectors on hand? If yes, try them to see I'd they are part of the difference. Scheid does a lot of needle work on their injectors whereas those 5x16 are much milder. Also, keep in mind that 180HP pumps have a weaker injection rate so they should make less power in the sub 3k rpm range where the 160 pump is still superior. Also, try adding some more timing and see how it responds. And finally check that the shut down solenoid is adjusted properly to allow full lift or it will act like a throttle stop.

Moral of the story. No matter how sure you are that you don't have any boost leaks, check again!
My truck had been getting worse and worse as I drive it daily, we are in the process of working on a house we are buying so the truck has been neglected. I started getting a bunch of oil coming out around my valve covers. I finally had time to work on the truck and pulled the intercooler to replace the valve cover gaskets and low and behold, this is what I found.
The oil wasn't from the valvecovers, but from the turbos overspeeding and spitting oil! Welded it back up and rebuilt both turbos.
Boost is back up to 85lbs and it feels great! Feels better than it ever has before, or else I've just sincerely forgotten how powerful the truck used to feel. Ill know when I get to take it to the track.
So this tells me a couple things that makes so much sense now. I think I have had some hairline cracks in these runners for a while now, like ever since I put the VGT on. I remember back when I was dialing it in, I was getting max about 75lbs of boost and all of sudden all boost would drop off and I would get a big WOOSH like the turbo surged. I think that I didn't notice the crack and it was getting pushed open at higher boost levels and gradually got worse and worse.

Whats crazy, is I cant believe I was still able to get even 40psi up until I tore it apart. These turbos put out some air! Wish I was setup to datalog turbo shaft speed. Poor turbos.

Yes! I hate it when people don’t come back to tie up loose threads. I was ready to swap out the secondary and build up a 64/64 HE351CW instead of the VGT. Once i get a few runs at the track, im thinkin I might just be plenty happy with this.

Hey Will, are you suggesting that I should plan to shift almost right at 3k with this 180 pump? Watching old videos, it looks like I was wrapping out to about 3600 with the 160 pump; but could still notice that I was falling off the power curve where maybe I should've been shifting around 3200 or 3300.... I can easily tune in an exact shift point now with my current transmission setup.
