Broken Dana 70 Axle with street tires

My 95' 2wd ate the driver's side axle tonight at the track. It broke right at the splines in the side gear at the carrier.

What's interesting is that I was not running slicks, just some well-worn 33" Wrangler MTR's. The track was slick and it hopped a little at the line, it probably broke around the 330' mark on my 4th or 5th attempt to pedal it.

All I can say is the driver of that yellow Honda was lucky I didn't have two good axles...

The more times I watch the video, the more I don't think it was excessive hop at the starting line. I think it broke more like 330' out when it wasn't hopping too much, just spinning so I lifted a few times.

I guess my next step is to carefully examine the other axle and see if they were starting twist before this one let go.

I admit, I didn't think it was possible to break a Dana 70 at the super smooth drag strip with street tires. The track was cold, probably 50*F with air temp in the mid 40's so traction was non-existent.

I know sled pullers won't even waste their time with the Dana 70, so it's no special feat to break one. I just didn't think it was possible with my lighter weight setup.

Axles

When I was racing cars the only time I ever broke a axle was when I had street tires on the car. It was the same deal, It spun and snap went the axle. It had strange axles so they were not stock. It happened twice with street tires and never with race tires. Street tires I mean BFGoodrich not a street race type tire. If you run good tires and keep it from shaking/bounching I bet you will be fine. Jeff

That's a D71 with 35 splines or should be. Not sure how different they are from the D70 I haven't pulled them and laid them side by side.
