I noticed this thread. I myself have always wondered if any tuners out there started with reading up on theory, then messed around with the tuning, or if most of them just started solely on messing around with the software and made their own theory by trial and error.

I just stole a few base tunes from random tuners, moved a few tables around, then called them my own, and under cut the original creator's prices, because that's what all the cool kids did, and I want to be cool.

Well I ordered the starlight diesel book and will try to learn best from that.

Hopefully he will have a class in my area sometime soon.

You'd be surprised how many "Well known" tuners did just that. Notice I didn't say "good"....you can be well known without being any good.

Spot on. And how many people just resold tunes from a tuners "library". If people would try to learn half as hard as they do to steal, they'd find out it's not that difficult.

More fuel, more air, more timing

Most of us have caught on to that part and have put in security features to prevent tune theft.

This is what I plan on doing. At the moment I am 21 mpg around town on my non tuning ability. Eventually I will learn little by little.

Yes it is.

I learned to tune during college on the FSAE car. Which has led to my career as a calibrator for a manufacturer.

Like many have stated above, modify tune, flash, drive, repeat.

Most importantly, take data, review the data, think about the data and make data driven decisions. There is a ton of good useful info out there. I believe Killer Bee Performance has a good tutorial on timing and fuel economy.
