A stock 24 valve 1998 1/2 5.9 Cummins powered Dodge has an electric lift pump mounted on the side of the engine. It is powered through a Deutsch two pin connector that is contorlled by the ECM (I would state that it is an Electronic Control Monitor but everyone knows what an ECM is anyway) The pump will run when activated by the key until pressure is reached , then the ECM will cut it off. The life of the stock electric pump is somewhere between 30,000 miles and ???. Mine first went out at about 30,000 miles. What can I say? When it is replaced, you can choose between a replacement the same as you originally had, an OE intank replacement pump, or an after market system. If you replace a failed stock system with an OE Intank pump and then later with an after market system, I would highly recommend that you remove the Intank system.

Hope that clears the air!

Thanks

Charlie
