2007 6.7 smarty problems

My pickup has been in rebuild stage for 1.5 years and now its done and ready to drive. I started it very briefly and let it run for 5 seconds or so and shut it down. I just wanted to see if it would start. The next day I brought my smarty out to change from 14me to 28me. I was going to take 14 out, but in the process something happened and I don't know what is going on now. The smarty said checking data for a while then went to programming...0% and then the message can error 160, program aborted. I tried it again, same thing. I saw somewhere else that maybe it needed to take the positive batteries off for a while and key on so I tried that and it did the same thing. Did the key trick to check codes and it show none but when I read codes with the smarty it shows PD601. I tried to clear it I don't know how many times and it won't clear. Put 2 brand new batteries in and still same thing. Tried charging them and same thing. After all that I decided to try the abs file on smarty and right away it says error code 117, wrong communication. When I turn the key on it does the dinging thing for a while and the dash lights come on, a bunch of them disappear and one reappears. The abs light. So when the key is on and the dinging is done there are 4 lights on, the engine light, the abs light, the check gauges and the seatbelt light. Anyone have any advice? I talked to Bob already and he said its not a smarty problem so I'm wondering if anyone else has had something similar? Bob seems to think it is a tipm problem but I don't see how it could be since I had it running just fine the day before and then I hook up the smarty and now have a mess.

Tipm's do some crazy things. I've changed quite a few for similar problems.

Any chance that the smarty is reading the code wrong? I just talked to my friend that works at the dodge dealer as a mechanic and he said there is no such thing as PD601. He is very confident that it is actually P0601 which is (P0601-internal Memory Checksum Invalid). If this is the case what is the fix then?

Update the smarty and try again. There is no need to return to stock first.

I don't know if this helps any. But checksum errors up to this point have been a smarty deal. Atleast with the trucks I've tuned with efi live. Have you tried to force recovery?? If I had it in front of me and it was my customer. I would try a forced recovery first. If that didn't solve the issue I would try and load a recovery file. They were given out a long time ago, and have since been retracted. I'm not sure why, but I've used them many times over and over. But now smarty says they arn't to be used and they are bad for the ecm. Like I said. I've used em a bunch. Just putting it out there as to what I was told by Bob. I spoke to him probably 3 or 4 weeks ago, had a similar issue with a smarty that wouldn't return to stock. Truck wouldn't start, don't remember the errors we got with it exactly, but sounds similar. When we tried to return it to stock, it sat there for a minute, started the download, then gave us an error. I believe it was the same one your getting.. We did a forced recovery on it and it worked. With this particular truck, it was already smarty tuned, and we were trying to return it to stock to put efi on it..

My friend was going to bring up his starscan or whatever it is on Friday and try to load stock software back into it. If it works, is there any problem updating the smarty to 28me and reloading it? Anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't think the smarty will do anything at this point. It would need a recovery file before I could upload the update right?

Maybe since you updated the smarty and the truck hasnt been updated could be kicking it out? Im not sure just throwing out what happened to me.

I have not updated the smarty yet. I was in the process of taking 14me out of the ecm when it quit.

Same thing that happened to my customers truck. Try a forced recovery first. Worked on ours. And i'll get u those files when i get bk to my laptop.

If i remember right, you hold down the number 9 for forced recovery. I will have to look on my laptop when i get bk to the hotel though to be sure.

update the smarty. If it hung up mid-flash, it will be in recovery mode. Update it and install it. It will recover the ECM. You don't have to unload a Smarty from the truck to update it.

So what do you recommend? Is there a "can wire" that could have come loose somehow?

You never know until you plug it into a starscan and/or ohm check the can circuit. A starscan is only as good as the guy operating it and his background knowledge of communication failure signs and symptoms.

Just talked to Brown's diesel, he thinks that it killed my ecm. I guess we will find out tonight. My friend is bringing his scan tool from the dealer to see if we can force it back to stock.
