IDI Performance

So I thought I would bring this up because I've seen a lot of people looking for upgrades for their 6.9/7.3 IDI and not knowing where to start or where to turn to.
Also most people who have an IDI truck don't have a lot of money to spend on modify there engine, so FREE AND CHEAP mods are key.

So those of us that know these mods should share our info here for others to have...

I found this site to be EXTREMELY Helpful for me when I started messing w/ my old IDI Truck it has a lot of free and cheap mod articles:
Ziggster's page

Also I found this site today, they seem to offer some good parts for IDI engines:

Ziggsters page is great for sure. Also anyone loving their IDI and who is on the net should check out the group over at oilburners.net and http://midatlanticforddieselclub.yuku.com

Gotta be careful with Ken from DPS performance, back in the day he was good and I talked with him a few times over email but I have heard his rep has been pretty bad in the previous years. Look for Mel (screen name: Agnem) on oilburners, or TDS as well as the BOOB site I believe he is now making injection pumps and injectors.

Cranking up the pump is great and easy, but just gotta get a pyro, not 100% necessary I guess but sure is nice to know if your bout to melt your motor down. Keep it under 1250 for no longer than 10sec or so, these motors won't take as much heat as the newer trucks.

3.5" or 4" exhaust should be good for all the power they will put out. Keep boost under 12psi or so before worrying about blowing head gaskets, and like the 6leakers they are TTY bolts so if the gasket goes studs are a good option.

If ya still have the soup bowl in the air cleaner, cut it off

As money gets spent on them you can add an intercooler from a SD, usually find em on ebay for $150 or so and just need to make up the piping. I got some pictures of installs from the good ole days of TDS saved here, http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IDI%20stuff/

Another common mod is to add a Holly red pump (electric fuel pump) to ease with priming and bleeding air and such in the system, use a BB chevy block off plate for the factory pump in the block and reroute the lines as necessary.

thats a little bit of the stuff I remember, course you can get into more power mods but it all depends on how much you want to add to the ole motor. I just love the simplicity of the old school non electronic diesels, 12v to the FSS and its good to go.

....gotta get a pyro.....
Plus two on all that was said. Oilburners is the TDR of the IDI world. I would say that a pyro IS MANDITORY BEFORE MODING THE IP FROM STOCK!!!! Even a bone stock IDI will make dangerous EGT's when hauling.

ok, im still somewhat new to the automotive diesels, but i know a fair amount about bigger ones, N-15 3406B detroit 60 and various others. my question to all of you is this, would it be easily possibly to put a variable geometry turbo on an IDI 7.3 with some sort of switch to control the vanes to make it act like the best of both worlds for the old girl? my way of thinking, with the 6.0 being smaller and higher revving with people constantly upgrading turbos, is it theoretically possible to do such a task? thanks to anyone who may have some input on the subject!

Easy....nope. The 6.0's VGT is electronically controlled via a bunch of measured data via a bunch of sensors. The IDI has none of these things. If it were possible to control the VGT with a in cab knob..........it might work, but you have to dick around with it all the time......gear to gear........not real practical.

That's why these sucker usually just run simple wastegated turbos.
