Up here in the great white north where salt is a form of currency, we've done many of them in the truck. Take the fan off, loosen the 2 long motor mount bolts, and jack her too the moon off the balancer. Yeah I know it sounds sketchy. If #1 rod journal is down you'll have to drop the engine back on the mounts and turn it over a little so it doesn't interfere with the pan and gasket when you put it in. Slide the pan and the pickup tube out in one shot, then slide it back in together. We usually factor on 2-3 hours for a fairly clean one.

Spray the bolts down with penetrating oil a day or two before you do the job.
We change them all the time in chassis. We lift them from above. I wouldn't put a jack on the damper.

I've done it once and need to do it again. Swear to all that's holy fawk a gasket I'm using motorcraft gray silicone the next time. Stuff is like concrete when cured and DOES NOT LEAK!

I didn't remove my fan and now I have a large piece missing from the fan shroud.
I also used a engine hoist when I did mine, trans is coming back out for rebuild again so no time like the present to fix that damn oil leak!

Be sure it's a pan leak and not the timing case, tappet cover, or power steering/vacuum pump seal.

12/24 valves are nightmare biitches where extreme oil leaks are concerned.

Think of it this way, Gary. She's not leaking oil, she's sweating horse power.

Gary, firepunk recently covered details about oil pan gasket replacement with engine in the truck. Check out their YouTube Chanel.

Does anyone just lie under a vehicle and figure this kind of stuff out with their own brain cell?

What hell did anyone do before the internet and virtual hand holding?

I did not know this was possible. Now I kind of want to try it.

Wouldn’t you need to disconnect the CAC tubing, some ground cables, tranny lines if an auto, and maybe some wiring? Not arguing, just wondering.

When I did mine I removed the fan and the two rear valve covers, disconnected the CAC tubes on both sides, loosened the long motor mount bolts and lifted it from the top with a hoist. Once it was up I put some short pieces of 2X4 under the motor mounts in case the lift failed. Lots of room for an air powered ratchet and to slide it out after the oil pickup tube was unbolted. The hardest part was scraping the old gasket off the bottom of the block. Have a good tool on hand for that, you'll need it.

Nope. Just jack her up. It doesnt have to move that far maybe only an inch or so off the motor mounts. The trans cooler lines you can just kind of push out of the way.

If you live in the rust belt, oil leaks are more like rust prevention.
