Would it not be much easier if PPL changed their rule to state the MWE groove must be located behind the stepped portion of the wheel?

Read both sets of rules, one clearly says where it must be, another is broader.

I can not see your picts mark, But I will say there is a big differance between a map GROOVE and map RING. A ring at face of the wheel is not a groove.

The part that is causing a controversy is the map width enhancement portion. The reason for the map grove is to allow a stream of air flowing into the turbo a place to go when the exhaust side wheel slows rapidly.

If you look at this picture closely, you will see that the grove is in the bore that allows air to the wheel. When the wheel slows the air can move through the map grove passage back into the intake track to the turbo. The grove is not there to move air towards the wheel and around the bore that the majority of the air is moving through.

What is happening is that people are using the map groove as a pathway to move air into the turbo wheel and around the 3.0 inch bore. This is a large advantage since allowing a .25 inch grove all around the 3.0 inch bore results in a 3.5 inch pathway to the wheel.

Here is a picture of a modified housing doing just that,

Here are more views that explain what I mean,

Here are pictures of housing with a stock map grove,

What you can see is the bore size is the same size before and after the map groove.

The rule needs to be clarified to either allow the current practice, or change the map width enhancement sentence to;
Map width enhancement groves are allowed, but may not exceed .250 inches. All air entering the intake wheel, including air from the map width enhancement grove, must flow through a maximum of 3.0 inch bore.

Not sure why some can't see the pictures, but here they are in order.

Yes, I believe that truck has some history. It was one that ol JR Adkins had sitting in his shop years ago.
