Converter Identification...

Just had a core come in with a billet converter, nothing special, appears to be the sonnax cover. But the unit is dark grey in color with a medium metallic flake. Just trying to figure out who to call with the numbers on the converter for more info. The rest of the trans looks like it was recently rebuilt, thinking this may be a viable option as a converter for my father's ambulance that we are tossing the 460/C6 in favor of a 12 valve/47RH.

Dacco possibly. Or whatever was on sale at a local parts store or paint shop.

I thought Dacco converters were all black? I'll give them a try though, thanks.

I use them for my transmission shop they build converters in house...quality product. Single disc billet cover and triple discs are both a nice product.

I can't say I use Dacco, but for stock(ish) trucks and gas builds I use the Recon converters from Transtar. No problems with them in 6 years, they use the same front cover for their billet singles, I never bother with them for triples though. For close to the same money I can get a custom tailored DPC triple. But I will say that their billet converter for the 96-02 46REs is a little monster, really tightens up the shifts even though it's a moderately high stall (2400-2600rpm), and locks up is pretty stout but not harsh.

I use TranStar every now and then but they're a hell of a drive and they won't deliver to my shop. Dacco and a local Precision supplier are closest to me, and I've never had a problem with either.

I bought their triple disc to try it out...was pleasantly surprised. Stall is about 400rpm less and is pretty tight. Customers have been pleased with the results.

The closest Transtar warehouse isn't far from the VA Medical Facility I go to, so I drop in once in a while to put a face with the name. I can get same day delivery from them if I order before 10:30am too.

That's good to hear if I need one in a hurry, I figured they'd be a decent unit, they just seem to rate them conservatively on torque capacity for warranty. Generally my customers will never need more then the 750ft-lbs single disc, or they need a good triple that will hold 1200ft-lbs or more and that's where their expensive CR70X-S5 tops out. Do I think they'll hold more, sure. Do I want to worry about them warrantying it, nope. Phil doesn't care what I throw at his triples, custom stalls them to request, and even offers a lifetime warranty for an additional $100.

Closest transtar is about an hour away from me, and otherwise I agree. Majority of the customers won't exceed the limits of the single disc and if/when they do exceed it or a triple disc there is always a viable alternative like DPC.
