Yes, round plug on the transmission for 3rd gen. 2ng gens are on the firewall.

I use an old style high/low beam foot switch. Fastened it to the body with sheet metal screws and it’s activated via my left foot. Placed it in the location of where a high beam switch would be on the floor. Had to cut a small hole in the carpet. Works great and one less switch in the dash.

Just double check, the pin may be the same on the trans but 03 still had pcm on firewall. orange/ black comes to mind....

You can get it at the firewall or trans. Many of the 03's had a 47re.

And if you don't know what a kick dimmer is, there is no hope. Sell your truck and move on 😂

48re Trans Problems

My mistake. The early CR’s did have 47re and had to be tapped at the firewall for lock up switch.

The majority of 3rd gens will be tapped at the round 7pin plug on the driver side of trans. Squeeze the two tabs, wiggle up on the connector until loose.


Everyone remains quiet in a thread until someone makes a small mistake. Then it’s like vultures on a gut wagon.

What to does the plug look like on the 47re? Mine must be a 48re, it has a round plug and all of the parts I put in it are 48re parts...

From your short video looks like a 48re, valvebody plugs are the same. in 04.5 the got rid of the pcm on the firewall and went with the programming intergraded into ecm. 03 is a mixed bag year . you probably have the 305/555 motor instead of the 250 horse. you got an early bird.

I’ll have to look at the data plate on the motor and on the trans. I’m certain the engine data plate says it’s a 250 hp and I’m pretty certain the build date is early 2003.

The trans was rebuilt in 2013, so the marker on the trans case and sticker on the TC says, so maybe it was originally a 47re and someone swapped a reman 48re into it in 2013?

I was looking at the video of you spinning the input shaft and it looked line there was a Oring on the Stator support. Another easy indicator would be when you rebuilt it were the forward clutches different then the direct, 48 have a fine tooth count compared to the 47. The 47 you can interchange the two. 03 had mix and match parts early on...

A 48re will lock the torque converter in 2nd gear with a switch, correct?

I cant answer that I haven't run a stock valvebody in anything I own for quite some time. I will say that a lot of trans shops when rebuilding these things swap all kind of parts around from different units. all parts pretty much interchange and work. 48re has the most rugged geartrain , a better pump and the best valvebody . sonnax is actually converting 47re valvebodys to work like a 48 because cores are so hard to find 03-07 diesel and v10 only... if you ordered a kit for a 48re and the forward clutches fit on the planet (six pinion) you have the 48. how is it running for you anyway have you hit the road again ?

It is awesome! But umm also comparing it to the weak trans before it was rebuilt. But it shifts hard but smooth. I was expecting it to just about throw me though the windshield with the shift kit. But it holds rpm higher and shifts way firmer. I’m very happy. Looking forward to pulling a trailer with it.

The firewall TCM was 03 only on the 5.9 automatic trucks.
Rule of thumb, if it has a CM848 ECM, the trans controller is in the ECM and I have yet to see an 04 with anything else, early or late.

Mark for my own knowledge, have you ever pulled a 305/555 motor from a 04 with a build date prior to 01/04 ? Im not doubting you but I can remember a conversation in Muncie in 2004 between opie and bill about the new 325 600 motor got rid of the pcm from the firewall. I cant find a good pic of a 04 online. maybe somebody on here has one... maybe they are as rare as the 98 12v with back doors that open lol

The firewall TCM died for the model year of 2004.
The junkyard interchanges will show TCMs (right hand firewall) for 2003 interchanges, but nothing in 2004, either late or early.
The next time one appears is on the 2007-1/2 up 68RFE (RH Firewall) and the 2007-1/2 up AISEN trucks (under the driver's dash).

I do know that the early 2004 engine compartment and engine harnesses themselves are one-off parts, as the pre-325 (1-04-2004 and prior) engines had the fan harness in the passenger's side of the headlight harness, similar to 2003 (which is also it's own duck).
The 325 engines moved the fan plug over to the actual engine harness, in the C-1 (front ECM) plug, I believe.

FWIW, the early 2004 automatic engines have an ECM, with an OEM part number of 4090071 and are marked with a CM848 number, which makes it a 3 injection event ecm.

The ONLY 2 event ecms are any marked with part number 3963944 and they can be found with either a CM846 or CM845 designation.
Some even have no CM number ('CM' is blank).

The service replacement ECM for 2003-2005 is 4937150 and is a CM848 designation.

I can confuse you further, and get into all of the APPS varieties on all of the 5.9 commonrails, if you'd like?

So this brings up a question I brought up on another thread, but never really got an answer.... My 03 only has OD on/off. My dads 05 has a tow/ haul setting and an OD on/off. Is it possible to set my trans up like my dads 05?

My guess would be yes, but I’d probably need an 04-05 engine wiring harness, trans wiring harness and ECM. And at that point it’s probably cheaper and much easier to but Firepunk’s Anteater trans tuner.

Update on my transmission. Still very happy with it. Sifts and drives great. Only problem is I can’t stay out of the throttle. Fluid seems to get pretty hot of I’m sitting in traffic or not moving very fast, but then drops once I get driving again. Thought about maybe putting new electric fan on the cooler that is always on or maybe switched. Or maybe a deep pan. How much cooler does a deep plan keep the fluid?

Deep pan doesnt keep the fluid cooler period. Research thermal fluid insulation and you will see what i mean.

48re Trans Problems

I’m not entirely sure what would be needed to make your 03 trans similar to an 05 electronically. Keep in mind the 04.5-05 trans were the only year of the tow haul only with no third gear lock out like your 03 has. It also has a Throttle Valve motor on the side of the case which electronically controls the throttle valve. Your 03 trans doesn’t have this nor the wiring and electronics to support the TV motor. My 05 has the tow haul mode, I would much rather have 3rd gear lock out instead. Though a simple electronic box from BD fixes this issue.

For the temperature issue, more cooling capacity would be needed via an auxiliary cooler. I’ve been shopping Derale auxiliary coolers for my 05. I can fit their 15960 between my transfer case and rear of the cab under my truck. It’s their largest auxiliary trans cooler I have found with a stacked fin plate design.
What temperatures are you seeing at peak?

A deep pan gives you more fluid capacity. Meaning it will take a longer amount of time for the fluid to reach operating temperature. I run a PML deep pan mainly for draining fluid easily and a rigid machines flat sealing face. Yet, my pan gasket still leaks.

Glad your rebuild is working for you. A good converter makes a world of difference with these transmissions.
