Cam removal/install

As I build my new to me motor (94'), I am harvesting parts from my old motor (98'). The previous owner had said he put in an Enterprise Engine cam #47 if I recall. Not sure what it is or how to tell. Does Enterprise grind stock cams?

With both engines on stands can I drain the fluids and flip motors upside down for easy removal/install? Also I hear CR lifter tappets are the way to go? Easy to change upside down with a magnet or something?

If you get the engines upside down, you should be able to push lifters up and get them out with a magnet. You may have to push them up thru pushrod hole from the bottom. As for CR lifters, they have the biggest foot. You will have to narrow up fuel pump lobe if you are using stock lift pump.

With my Colt Cam, they gave me 24V tappets. Seems with "bigger" cams, the 24V tappets are the way to go. Like Brad said, I'd call EEP and tell them what you got and what tappets to use if it matters.

The 24v tappets are an upgrade over the 12v tappets. The cr one are bigger yet but are likely to interfere with the fuel pump lobe if you are running a cam with said lobe. If your cam doesn't have the pump lobe then run the cr tappets.

Got a 188/220 cam from Hamilton and some 24 valve tappets. It's what they recommend for my 97 12v... also some 165 lb springs and titanium keepers and retainers

Cam is stamped with a "47" doesnt look like the stock cam in the other motor i have. I'll call Enterprise to see what the profile is and the flip the motors upside down on the stands and swap.

Cam is out. Not sure what to look for as far as wear. Only pitting is on the round journal at the end of the cam. Not rough. Anything I should look for?

Enterprise wrote and recognized it as their own cam, but didn't have records on the exact profile. They said they can dial it to determine the profile. Can any cam shop do that to avoid shipping? Anybody interested in an Enterprise cam with cam gear once I figure the profile?

That lobe doesn't have much life left in it, looks like it's about worn through the hard surface at the top of the lobe.
If you fixing a engine to keep for a long time I'd get a new cam and lifters.

Click the image to open in full size.

Just take oil pan off and you can grab em if you have small hands (wife did mine) or a magnet.

You can do a decent job profiling a cam with a couple of v-blocks, a dial indicator and base, and a degree wheel. Even just a caliper to measure lobe height can tell you a lot.

I dropped it off at Oregon camshaft. They are going to polish it and profile it. It was a stock Cummins cam that Enterprise ground. We'll see what they say and depending on the condition and what the profile is, it will either go in the new motor or be for sale.

It looks like in the pic it is starting to whipe that lobe, does the profile of the tip look different than the rest or is it just how the pic looks. If it is that cam is junk, don't take a chance with it. When they wipe a lobe it puts metal everywhere.

I think it's just the pic, but we'll see what the cam shop says. If it's no good, I won't use it or sell it

Today I took the stock cam out of my "new" motor. Cam looked good and was above all minimum specs. No pitting, but one of the lifters was scored pretty good. Corresponding lobe looked OK. I'll take this cam in too to have it polished/inspected (I figure I've come this far...) Do I need a full set of lifters or just replace as necessary? Can I Rob a lifter out of my old motor?
