Detroit 60 Series Tuning

Who does it?!

I don't want to run a programmer, I hear they're pretty brutal.

I just picked up a '96 Newell 45' motorhome and it has the 12.7 in it. Runs fairly decent, it's definitely getting a turbo, manifold and lift pump, I think that'll be a good refresher for her.

Right now I'm thinking it's a 400 or 430 horse setup, as all RV retards claim it's a "500", my ass.

Valve cover says it's a 470hp setup but I'm assuming it's been swapped somewhere in it's life.

Why are you assuming it's been swapped? The valve cover should be with original engine. It's a ddec 3 I'm guessing? I'm thinking about trying serious series 60. Is it running a wastegated turbo? Is your manifold leaking?

There's a few "Reman" stickers here and there.

Yes, I assume it's a DDEC 3, also from my reading the '96's never came in a higher horse rating than 430. So the 470 valve cover sticker makes me think it's a newer motor.

It has that prehistoric turd TMF55 Garrett, I'm already looking into an SXE S400 setup.

Is there no date on the valve cover? Phone the rv manufacturer and find out esn see if it matches. Also if Detroit did any remans then they might have info on the new engine as well.

Bw 171702 is a good turbo for those engines.

It's probably 430 on the pedal and 470 on cruise control.

Are they dual rated like that? Sounds like something they'd do.

Definitely cutting the muffler off, it's a joke, they just 90'd into the top side of it and it comes out the end...

Um... You need to find out which cylinder kits, if it's G.K series engine with the wrong cam and you try to tune.. You'll melt it, the BK, MK's and PK's were good DDEC 4 engines.. Fitzgerald has a combination that really works, THEEEEEE BEESSSTT Tuner is at Perkins Equipment in Kentucky.. I'm not gonna say his name but he is the guy who was figuring it out with 60 series before pittsburg power could even get a box for an N14. Run a borgwarner replacement charger, if you're gonna swap, the ceramic coated manifolds really help, and have timing checked with a dial indicator.. If the shop you take it to doesn't know wtf that means then there is NO real detroit men where you're at.. A bent worn dowel pin and lots of tune will melt it quick..

Thanks Fordpower.

I don't want to get TOO rowdy with it being it has that little 6 speed Allison in front of it and I'll probably have the racecar trailer totaled up to the 15kish mark on weight.

Figure if I can get it on a 550hp tune, swap chargers, manifold, and put some water/meth on it, it'll run up any hill nice and cool.
