Does anyone have any guesses as to why they machined that hole in the first place?

I am pretty sure you are correct. Is that block setup to run water?

Relatively fruitless to have an oil cooler recess with no water?

True story. Never thought about that. Since it has holes to the cylinders it much flow some kind of water. I want to see one of these blocks with the sleeves out of them.

New blocks make a big difference, billet even better . Id like to see him weld an old KB block oil soaked that has to be burned out.

One of the comments I read last night points out the large crack In the Weld at 3:50 in. Then the host states " No pulling". Not sure if he means the material contracting or lifting the arc
