99 FL60 mutt/conversion/repower project build

I personally don’t see how the medium duty stuff is worth messing with. I’m not knocking what your doing I’m just trying to figure out how it is more cost effective vs class 8.

Your engine isn’t cheaper to rebuild, A gold kit from Cat is 5-6k and IPD is more like $2500. 19.5’s don’t wear worth a damn and are probably some of the most expensive tires you can buy. (love how they look on a pickup though). Your fuel mileage isn’t a whole lot better than the average semi hauling the same weight, same driving rules ect. From where I’m sitting your limits seem to be greater than the benefits. I know I’m probably missing something but from your numbers your getting 8mpg hauling 1/2-1/3 the load as a 6mpg truck. So on a 1000mi trip he may burn $150 more in fuel but you have a lower paying load assuming your figuring it by weight or even piece count. I know the semi will have more tires but it’s a wash since the red truck i posted a pic of in the other thread just changed his drives after just under 300k miles, 19.5’s will never come close to getting that.

Fuel mileage is the big difference... Took me 6-8 months to get my LMM from 8 to 11 mpg.. I'm going on 7 weeks right now..
Pump injectors turbo valve springs are all going to get gone through... Might even get a camshaft...

Alot of stuff is fairly easy to figure
Oil change... Say 10k intervals is 10-12 changes per year.. I'm 100-120k miles a year.. 6gallon and a filter times number of changes a year...

Major un expected failure it's almost impossible to predict, you just hope you have enough cash on hand to fix it..
I've seen service intervals for 8.3 from 150k to 500k miles.. maybe Chris can give an hour intervals

I know in-frame for the engine is ~4-5k in parts for all Cummins stuff and about 1/3 that for aftermarket.. plus 40-50 hours of labor for a shop

The goal is to have enough cash on hand to rebuild it anywhere at anytime.. plus operating expenses..

I can do the Normal planning.. say it cost 10k and serivice life is 300k that's .03 mile.. realistically.. I'll set aside said money aggressively until I've reached said amount.
I was saying the cost you had with the downtime on the DMAX setup, airplane tickets, rebuilds, downtime etc. Did you figure those numbers into your OCPM on the Dmax setup.

For said years yes
For 2017 ocmp was $0.61 mile for the dmax.. and $0.40 building the FL60..
2015 was stupid high like $0.75 range
2016 was $0.50 range
Have to dig up paperwork for exact numbers..

Unless I'm hitting 13+mpg I'm going to be taking a hit with the FL60...

Unless you're getting major discounts on Insurance/Maintenance/fuel/tires one is going to be hard pressed to operate a class 8 for less then $1.30

I currently don't how long these 255/70/22.5 will last I paid roughly double for 6 22.5 than what I did for 6 19.5 in which they got replaced every 100-120k. Hopefully 250k.. price would be a wash between 19.5/22.5

If I'm not doing 10+mpg it's there's few reasons for me to have a MD and current Engine is basically stock with plenty of room for improvement

Well you need to figure the cost over longer periods, as an example you had high maintenance costs in 2015, and probably low costs in 2016, and then back up again in 2017. While yes annual is a useful number, to get the real cost of ownership you need to go out over a longer period.

Define "long periods"
there's guys that rotate equipment every 10-1-4 months, I ran my dmax for 4 years.. and probably would continue to run it if it wasn't for the ELD mandate

I put 4-5 years on the FL60 it's good possibility I'm looking at two options completely refurbishing it... Or pull off what I can use and scrap the rest..

Well that’s my point, if we average your numbers and say your cost is $0.65 (since your from $0.50 to $0.75) and mine is $1.30 but I’m hauling two or 3 times the loads.

Again I’m not saying your doing anything wrong I just don’t see the benefit.

I would say basically get to at least a period of where you are doing an inframe on the medium duty. I mean if you put $10K in engines in the Dmax over 3 years and put $5K in the FL60, that should be factored in. You can play with the numbers all you want, but really it should be total cost ownership, for the period you own the vehicle, factoring purchase and sell price.

LTL rates are usually 1/2-3/4 a truck load rate.. the stuff I haul is crap for full size yet my operating cost is substantually lower.. I can turn a nice penny with it.. and I don't have fight as hard against competition
I was talking to one of our big truck drivers... And asked what his rough day income goal was... Said he needed 1200+ day.. compared to 500 a day I need.. I've done 1200 day gross ans that extremely well for me..
I just hauled a load in to Chicago 6-700 for the load... .ost Big truck won't touch it.. me I'll do that all day long

Gotcha..
Honestly I need at least a year down with the FL60 to rt a better idea..

Right now I'm still working on getting a base line and figuring out what can be done at lowering operating cost and getting money to so do

58° out hauling a Jeep Wrangler... Across 64...
Little 362/68 getting little warm... 1400° at 3/4 throttle... Having to slow to 55-60 to keep EGTs in check......
IDK how much relief I'll get jumping to a 74 turbine...
Or should I jump to a 400 with 83 wheel?

I would definitely bump timing before you decide what charger. That will affect it some...how much I'm not sure on the 8.3L, but a 5.9 was noticeable.

Maybe...maybe even more.

You get the fuel in the cylinder earlier and it might tone that charger down too. Mechanical engines are funny....

Unfortunately yes...
~900.00 to swapp everything DV wise out to common stuff from Columbus diesel..
Supposedly Swapping to 191s? will increase flow by some 40cc... IDK
New 8.3 12m pump is 1300.00
got to get over there so I can put said info down on paper

Got back to the house little bit ago.. left Monday put ~2900 miles down this week... Leave out Monday AM, kinda hard to say no when you need $

1400° egt was running 65mph up a 7% grade at 24,000lb gross...
Backed off to 55 mph and held 1100°
Not sure how I feel about that... Thinking it should be better but not sure....

Still stock timing/gov springs injectors
