N14 Cummins

Looking to build another logtruck, found a '94 Freightliner fld120, 280WB, 24 feet of frame after cab. Has a N14 Cummins 435hp, 18spd. My question is how good is the N14? Can the HP be bumped easy and reliably? Anything to Watchout for?

I am partial but I like the engine. They are good runners and reliable. Can go to 525 easily with the overhaul. Much more hp and I have no clue. But for a 525 they run damn good.

If it has steel top pistons, roll new rod and main bearings in it if you don't have engine history. Tune it to 525 and don't lug the motor under load. They have a tendency to fret main caps at high hp, low rpm work.

Not to highjack the thread, but, has anyone made a good steel top piston for the 855? I know I should search but it was on my mind and I just thought about asking.

Reasoning for the question? I heard a rumor once you could use the N-14 steel tops in the 855??

Well the N14 is an 855 so...

All it takes is the crank and rods.

It sure would be nice to take the tired 'ol 400 in my '87 K100, do an in frame, and come back together with good enough parts to get say a nice "non melting" 600HP from her.

edit: ...and not have to buy rods and crank.

I am currently running a n14 Cummins weekly. I've owned one before and own one again. They are reliable engines. I've never had any major problems with them. Treat them right and they will last a long time. Mine was a 435, but I bumped it up to 500. I will be bumping it up again to 525.

It's a good one. We've only seen the main cap fretting on the high mileage 500-525s. We've had good luck shimming the caps back to spec, but we don't warranty that fix.
