10.90 axle for rwd....d60?

Found a dana 60 local that has 3.54. This will be going in a half ton 1967 shortbed chevy. Truck will weigh roughly 5k and will be on the street as much as the track. Planning to have any axle narrowed with 40 spline axles an 9'' big bearing ends.

9'': will need upgraded everything, everywhere(couple of posts on here say it needs "pro" gears)
dana 60: Vmax, and a fast yellow dodge made it work, spools and limited slips are resonable
dana 70: heavier, expensive parts, stronger
I don't know 14 bolts, sterlings, aam

Where do You spend Your money?

Good article comparing the 9'' and the dana 60

I sheared the pinion on my dana 70 on my 2wd Junker Drag Truck. I didn't try aftermarket gears to see if a softer alloy or different chromoly alloy pinion shaft would hold up to the shock loading better but since I was leaving about half as hard as I planned to some day, I jumped up to a dana 80 to get that fatter splined pinion shaft. My truck weighs 5320 with driver and race tires and mainly races the 10.90 index class and runs 32x14.50 slicks and 3.55 gearing. Now I have a little more power than necessary to run 10.90's but nothing crazy, maybe 50 to 75 extra HP.

If your doing 9" bearing ends then go with an 80 or AAM. The dana 70 is marginally stronger vs a dana 60.

I think the d80 is an 11.25 ring vs the aam 11.5. I think you would have to ask a sled puller which is stronger. For drag racing they are both huge in every way.

Thanks for the replies, I have read up on both of your trucks

The 9 inch won't be cheap, I can tell you that much. Fab housing, dual caliper discs, big pinion pro gears etc. Probably have close to 3k in it when you're done. D80 won't cost much but will probably be 200lb heavier with brakes.

Can't imagine a D60 on a 10.90 truck. My D70 barely lasted at 13.0 before a couple pinion teeth decided to take a nap in the bottom of the diff all by themselves. Have a 11.5 in there now. Weighs more, but you just have to make more power. More weight in the back may not be a bad thing on a rwd

Ya, that 200lb gain makes me cringe. I can't do pro gears, street miles will kill it.

Two trucks have run 10's on them, rwd with Cummins power. Like Khaoskustoms stated, the D70u isn't a massive upgrade to the d60. It would definitely be a $$$ gamble

I'm shopping all options.
3.54 D80....$650 axle, 40 spline arb $1200. 3.31 gears are $460.

I could do a 35 spline setup and lincoln lock an open Carrier. Its hard to buy axles for a half assed setup though.

Next is a
3.42 14bolt....$175 axle, 40 spline arb is 1000. Parts are cheap, and they have a 3.21 gear set available for $285. Stock 30 spline carrier= ARB

Last for a reason is the 2011+ sterling 10.5 with factory elocker.
3.31 locker is 1200$, add the price of custom broached 40 spline spider gears 300$. After all that you have to trust stock ford parts to abuse....
