The argument I've heard against torque tubes, is the you need some flexibility, if the tube makes it seemingly solid, then every time where it flexed before, it is now being very stressful on the tie in points of the tube setup. I'm sure torque tubes are a subject that could be argued about all day, not trying to do that here, just offering what I've heard from different people.

There is a fine line between making a trailer not flex at all and having it flex too much. If it can't flex at all, it can very easily snap welds and start breaking stuff. I would venture to say the dude was just warning against adding the torque tube without doing any analysis to see how it would affect the trailer to keep it from being "too stiff."

I had a set of East doubles re-arched and strapped. They welded a 3/4" band to the bottom flange of both rails. Another guy broke a 45' flat and he had a 1" band welded to his and the shop advised against anything over 3/4 because the ride quality suffers severely. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1445273424.723831.jpg

I know if I load 2 50k coils on an 80k Mac it looks 100 times better than a cheaper built trailer.

What is the reason to set a 50K coil in the center of a trailer? Would a person not want it closer to the drive wheels or trailer wheels? I don't get it.

Load Laws. 50k over the drive axles that only have 25k of legal limit for additional load don't fly!

As cquestad said the bridge laws. The guys who haul big coils all the time buy the Mac 80K which is rated for 80K in 4'. 29" tall beams with 1" top and bottom flanges. There are quite a few 80-90,000# single coils that move around. The azzhat in the bottom pic is the local rate cutter, he buys the cheapest equipment he can find and that's what happens. Shut down a bridge in Louisville with that stunt. His drivers lose one every couple of months.

I had a Featherlite trailer rated for 7K and it was pretty sad with 7K on it. Bought a 14k Eby and it's not as scary looking with the same 7k.

I have been looking for a trailer to haul my rebuilt skid steer. It appears as though trailers, in general, are increasing in value. All the used ones are selling more than a new one. Stupid crazy prices. Think I'll start looking into new trailers, 10K or 14K, 18' or 20'. My 7K car hauler doesn't seem to be liking it's task of hauling a skid ster.

I personally have a 24+4 Longhorn 20k GN that I bought new in '03 nice trailer many miles and heavy equipment hauled. But with what I know now I wouldn't buy another, pulls hard and bounces a lot in a CCLB truck. The 28+4 20k GN (unknown brand) is nice pulls much better than the Longhorn, it has the pop-up rear and slide under ramps. Ramps buckled first time I hauled my Skidder on it and the rear pop-up hasn't faired well from my dozer. We bought a pair of Big Tex low pro, spread axle 22+4 20k trailers at work. Those are some of the nicest pulling trailers, the deck height is 6" shorter than my trailers. I'm debating trading both mine in for a new Big Tex Spread Axle
