pto not working??

we have a '94 6400 with a loader attachment. when we flip the switch for the pto, the light on the dash comes on but nothing. how can i fix this? i was suggested to "bypass the switch"? to me, if i flip the switch and the light on the dash works, then im pretty sure the switch works. dunno. is the switch a multy purpose switch or heck, i dunno. thanks in advance.

thomas, i would check the relay(AL78132) between the switch and the actual hydraulic mechanism that operates the pto, or it could be the sensor(AL162765).. Check the output of the solenoid (RE53051) Its kinda guess and check.. dustin

Check the voltage at the solenoid.. ( at the back of the tractor its above the PTO housing on the right.. should be just above a small valve housing that says something like PTO Clutch... (been a while..) You want to check the voltage to this solenoid when you turn on the PTO.. You have to check the voltage without breaking the circuit.. (basically don't try to check the voltage with it unpluged.) Use a paper clip or something to slide down the back side of the connector.. Put one lead of your meter on one wire.. the other on the other wire..
With the way the light is acting.. I'd guess that the electrical side of the circuit is working, but the valve is stuck.. or that there is an hydraulic or mechanical problem...
Did it just stop working on day.. or came out.. and it didn't work??

well, the tractor was sitting for about 2 years. the last owner was using it when a bad fuel leak occurred. is sat for 2 years. i decided to take over and guess what i found, the fuel filter fell off. put it on, replaced the battery. it fired over like a champ. runs good to. when trying to operate the pto, the light comes on but no action. i will be headed out there this weekend to work on it. i appreciate all the tips. having an a/c cab is really nice. we cut the hay last week but need to rake and bail our hay still. been sitting since it keeps raining. thanks again. any suggestions to where to get a manual for it?

Your cheapest route on the manual would be to find a PDF version.. you can get them from a dealer.. or I have seen them online.. (sometimes on Ebay.) Deal will be anywhere from $30-75.. And they might not even know they can get them...
On your PTO.. Id say the PTO valve is stuck from sitting.. everything electrical is probably OK.. (Like you said.. the light is coming on.. ) Normally if there is an electrical problem.. the light will flash...
Let me see if I can find a pic of the valve...

It is probably the switch. That PTO switch has been updated at least 5 times I can remember they are a known problem and an easy fix if thats it. If not check the solenoid on back as previously mentioned and hope the problem lies there, if its been sitting and mr. mouse decided to eat some wires its a nightmare!!!!

i removed the valve. cleaned up everything. even before i cleaned it, that day the light would blink. i am afraid we might be missing something. after taking the panel off the side to get to the pto mnodule (timer), we found two connectors clean but not connected to anything. we bought it used and not running, so we are now finding all sorts of "bugs". there is a connector leading off of the pto module (timer) connector but its not connected to anything. also, found another one just laying in there as well. the pic i saw of the control panel, im starting to think im missing a control/switch? the one furthest back towards the back? not sure though. waiting for my repair manual to come in i ordered. any sugfgestions?

well, i figure i can update the scenario/problem. sincer we couldnt use the pto, we were juyst loading and unloading round bales. the hydraulics quit..... and in the process of parking it to check fluid level and leaks, the trans quits working. its the powerquad i believe. changed trans and hydraulic filters. still nothing. hooked up guages at the hyd. filter and i believe the charge pump, nothing.

im starting to think the pump has gone bad. any suggestions? oh, we also changed the hyd. fluid today when we changed the filters. didnt look too good but have seen worse. definetly looked like a tractor that sat up for a few years and condensation got into the oil. any suggestions? any idea of how much a hyd. pump costs? to have one rebuilt? just curious. how can i tell if its a charge pump or a hyd. pump? thanks in advance.
