what tranny for 8.3 cummins

Im acquiring parts to install my 8.3 cummins into a International 4700 size truck. The truck is a old uhaul truck model 1256 if i recall.

I pull heavy farm equipment and need more power and more gears than the current 5 spd thats in it

What tranny can i bolt to the engine/bell housing?

Eaton has a 6 spd that is in their medium duty trucks or if you have an air compressor and tanks you coul put the 8 double L in there.

The 8.3 has a compressor and i have an air tank on ths truck. Who makes this 8LL amd what could i expect to pay for it?

Eaton/fuller makes the 8ll, imo if you're going air shift truck tranny; 1. Stick with fuller and 2. get as many gears as you can afford.

Good info guys.

On a side note, can I use a exhaust brake from a 5.9 cummins on this motor and will it operate properly?

Probably not, but if you call Jacobs or pacbrake I bet they make one that will fit.

I think I'd go with a 6613 or rt09513, 13 speed will let you split the gears on the high side for the hills.

No matter which transmission you choose, do some homework and make sure the trans you plan to buy is actually what it's advertised to be, metal data plates fall off easily. Also research gear ratios and choose a trans that has a good OD ratio. For a medium duty truck there is seldom need for more than 10 forward gears, 10 speed transmissions are also very common and alot easier to find that 13s which also effects price, in a good way.

My inlaws have an 8.3 in there motorhome and it has the same pacbrake as my dads 24v it just has an adapter between the brake and the Turbo outlet flange

The data plate on the 8.3 turbo is missing so I cant identify but the outlet looks to be the same as the hx35, h1c, etc...

Most 8.3 motors have an HX40. The HX40 outlet looks like an HX35 outlet but its a bit bigger. The HX40 flange will measure 4" on the outside diameter. If you have an HX40 you will need the get an inline pipe mount exhaust brake kit. You'll still want to mount it as close to the turbo as possible so back pressure to the engine builds fast, reducing reaction time. If your 8.3 has 2 valve cylinder head you will want to put heavier exhaust valve springs in it to prevent valve float. Cummins has the springs.

Oops, Im wondering if my "8.3" isnt a 5.9. Ive read dozens of internet articles but cant find a definitive answer.

The tag on the pump is missing so thats out.

Guy I bought it from doesnt know

Ive seen dimensions for the 8.3 listed but im curious if there isnt some other way to identify a motor without taking it apart.

I thought it was a 8.3 because of the huge fan and the air compressor bolted to the back of the timing case.

The motor came out of a cab over Ford with 5 speed manual behind it. Clutch splines reveal a input shaft size larger then say a nv5600
