I'm also running the same type 55 IC and having the same intake air temp issue. At the start of my last run my intake air temp was 64* at the end of the pass intake temps were 101* outside air temp was about 68* here in MD. With my single rule 4000 GPH pump I checked my flow through my cooler all the way back to my tank and found I was only flowing about 17 GPM. Planned on adding a second pump to see if that would help but with was is being said here it looks like I need a better IC.

I bought the cooler as is but I don't believe it's been modified. I have clear hoses so know both pumps are moving water

I would also add it seems many people especially ones using frozen boost intercooler don't use anywhere near enough water flow for the size of their core.

We use these all the time, they're actually designed for static pressure unlike a bilge pump.

Someone should make a manifold to use 5.9 electric water pumps as intercooler pumps. 50 gpm and can handle some pressure.

What would be a good round about number for water flow in GPM?

that solely depends on how large the core is and target temperature. From the info you posted above I would be running three of those pumps not one and the larger the lines the better with a low pressure water pump.

Depending if the belt drive guys are using a Ace or a Hypro pump they are capable of 120 PSI and 100-200 GPM. They are 2" suction by 1.5" discharge. Not sure what exact model number they are using but according of the theory of turning the water completely 3 times in a run that is a huge amount of flow.

you don't need one that large. you also don't need very much water. just enough so the system doesn't run out when you first turn it on.

There's a guy up here with a semi runnin a big precision ic, 3000+hp. Runs 50 or so gallons of ice water. I think it's just one big hypro pump, 5 or 6 1.5" lines. Grant it he's movin more air but runs about 110* air temp at the end of a run. Was 700* temp before he added an ic. Talk to the prostock tractor guys, they been runnin ic's for long time...lots of troubleshooting already done

There is more to an entire system than just flow through the intercooler and the size of the core. Efficiency in piping design and ideally getting the air to have a pressure drop so it spreads out through the cooler so it gets the best heat transfer makes a world of difference.

Prostock tractor setup is very different as they mainly rely on water injection to do their cooling. They dont really run an intercooler for cooling they run an intercooler for the extra torque and easier driving it out of the hole.

Intercooler Water Flow

As a rule we shoot for 1gal a sec. 80psi of boost I’ve held 45* temps at the end of the pull.

Do these pumps really need a supply from another pump?
