changing a 47re trans for 47rh

Hello I have a 96 2500 4x4 with the v10 and a bad 47re transmission, I picked up a wrecked 95 2500 4x4 with v10 and I'm told a 47rh transmission. Right out of the gate here I am no mechanic, so please dumb it down on technical terms when responding. I had a "Mechanic" trade out the transmissions and everything went fine until it was time to plug the wiring harness from the valve body back in, which was different, so the guy had me pull the valve body from the 47re to change out and put into the 47rh which seemed reasonable but he then told me that my drive line is going to have to shortened and he has a guy that is very good but it is about $350.00 which doesn't seem bad since it comes with a warranty and such, so I started reading up on these transmissions and understand that the OD case is longer on the 47rh which in turn makes my drive shaft to long now. My questions are 1. is it possible to switch out the OD casing from my old 47re to the 47rh? 2. I have the valve body and harness out of the 47re, so is this VB going to bolt up and wire up ok the the 47rh? I know I will have some more questions but for now this is a start. Thanks

It's alot more involved than that. The 47rh has a governor in the overdrive housing, the re does not. Also not as simple as swapping the valve body either. There are also two holes feeding pressure to the governor thrue the piston support, you'd have to completely tear the trans down to block them.

You could put the complete 47rh in and just run a toggle switch for lockup and overdrive. Would be all the electronic control it would need. Would shift 1 thru 3 fine as it is, then manually trigger lockup and overdrive.

The 47re 8 pin connector in the case wont fit in a 47rh main case. In short, unless you work on these units all the time, you're in for a lot of frustration and down time figuring out how different those two models actually are. And if you're working with 4x4, the case is different length which will change driveline lengths

That's what I am noticing, I am not a mechanic but have always been mechanically inclined and at this point in the project I can already see that this is all way over my head and ability. I appreciate the responses. I may look into the manual switching of the od or I may just do some swapping and go completely manual, the rig has been down for awhile now so I am gonna have to do some thinking on this one. Again Thanks.

I would have him swap the valvebody back to the 47rh and just run 2 switches .1 for lock up and 1 for overdrive .you power center wire and Ground the other 2 wires with a switch to make od or lock up work .Really Simple to do .
