I've seen that happen a few times! Local pull a couple years ago, guy hauling ass down the track, all of a sudden the whole receiver just rips off and the truck take off

i know you had a hitch start to breaking towing a trailer...can you or anyone else post pics showing how to brace and/or add strength to the stock receiver hitch...
i have looked and can not see any easy way to do it, thanks.

I put a Putnam 15,000lb/1600lb 2" receiver hitch on. I used the old receiver hitch to modify my weight rack for more height

Me too! It comes back today after 4 hooks at Schieds. I assume it took a beating around the loop. It will get another 4-5 hooks next weekend and I'll try to remember to take pics.

Finally got around to taking a few pics of my setup tonight. Seemed to work pretty good yesterday on its first pull http://youtube.com/watch?v=_7Ab42eC03Q
It has almost almost 5 inches of adjustment but not sure how it will work for most trucks because with mine I have found that the bottom of the reciver hole on the hitch had to sit right around that 25-26" mark. I also like it for its easy adjustablity.

...no kidding. One of the saftey rules in our class is that the hitch point must be painted florecent orance for visibility. I had sprayed it only 1/2 an hour before putting it on and had to beat it into position because my brother pinched it in the vice a little to hard trimming the inside out with the plasma cutter.

RyanB, thats slick. Question though. Do they not have a clause in the rules at the places you pull that say "hook must be parallel to the ground" or something similar and meaning the same thing?

I am alowed to run an actual modified draw bar going to the axle but I have the hopes of pulling with the DHRA and actually seen this style being used at IRP by a few trucks so thats were I got the idea. I think if you look at the rules its talking about the actual draw bar (2"x2" tubing) has to paralell to the ground and be a "reese style hitch" I think you will be alright with this setup...there is no added leverage to the frame compared to any other style of setup, its adjustable and is pretty simple.

The rules state " the hitch must be horizontal to the ground and stationary in all directions." Page 19, 25, and 32 of the 2007 DHRA rulebook (all classes).
Edit, sorry, just now read your reply, I was a little slow. Anyway...some info. It is all interpretation I guess.

so what is everyones general thoughts on this style of hit? I don't see it being any different than putting a shackle or clevis on a normal draw bar...When bolted down tight and resting on the grade 8 adjustable bolts it doesn't move anywhere so in reality its no differance than most of the hitches posted above.

Having no experience what-so-ever, I would say maybe they think any hinge point, whether tightened down or not, would be a failure point. Weld it solid and it can't break....well....it would be stronger. I don't know. Personally, I like your design and would like to have one for the farm.

Pics as promised. The coating got chewed on the bottom side of the 2" receiver (hitch.jpg) and two 1/2" circles inside the loop (hitch2.jpg).
