what is this and how did it get there

in the process of tearing down my 24v after swapping to a 12v i found some form of material in the oil pan. it sounds like metal rattling around in the pan but yet a magnet will not pick it up. my brother ran a piece across a file to see what it did, and it created a graphite like powder when ground up.

is it possible to create this much carbon build up inside an engine and also how does this amount of build up make it into the oil pan? yes i have checked the block, crank, rods, and pistons. there are really no signs of of where this material could of come from.

also i am curious if that with high egts, can you bake the oil until it becomes a solid. like if there was sludge build up and you continued to heat it til it becomes a solid?

no its not magnetic at all. the pic shows what it looks like cleaned off with brake clean. which it looks like pieces of cast steel or something thats rattled around for a while. i couldnt find any broken rings or damaged pistons aside from slight valve contact. the bearings look barely used and no slop in the crank or rods. i checked all the lifter journals and none of them are damaged. couldnt find any damaged places on top of the head other than a few possibly bent valves. all the gears on the front are fine no damage there. the only other visible damage i found was where the cam gear retainer had rubbed the front tin cover so far. so either i am creating a serious amount of carbon or something has been dumped into this engine.

i took a piece and squeezed with a set of pliers and it appears to be carbon or something cause it just formed another chunk to the shape of the teeth on the pliers.

here is a closer shot of it next to a AA battery.

another picture next to the battery.

and another shot of it.

could it be from all the added zinc additive or type of oil used?

Was this engine ever apart before? I dont really see carbon being able to make it into the crankcase in that large of peices.

On second thought, inspect the turbo oil drain tube for more of the mystery material.

I would be amazed if the turbo could make chunks of coke that big.

as far as i know the only parts that were removed from the engine was the front cover when he converted it to a ppump 24v. other than that it is all original and only had 241k miles on it
