I installed the 2009 steering upgrade kit on my 2005 truck about 4 months ago. I was very happy with the improved steering response/feel and felt better knowing that it was an updated design and the parts were much beefier. That warm and cozy feeling went right out the window when I went to pull out of my garage and heard a loud pop/snap sound from the left front tire area! I probably only rolled about 1 foot from where I had parked, so I hopped out of the truck to take a look. This is what I found...

Has this happened to anyone else? Luckily it happened while leaving my garage and not while driving! I can't imagine what that would've done had I been on the freeway!

That's why I put thuren's crossover bar setup on my truck. It is really set up nice and extremely beefy.

I thought someone on CF had this happen.

Good thing you weren't at speed when it happened.

I really don't like heims on a DD... But it looks like Thurens setup may be a must. That sucks.

Was that a Dodge OEM upgrade? If so report it asap looks like a metal failure probably a bad batch out there just waiting to cause mayhem on the freeway!!

was the ball joint part of the upgrade? it looks rusty n old.

Ball joints were done at the same time. I had ordered the Carli ball joints and waited SEVERAL months for them to show, but they never did, so I threw some Moogs in there. I live in Salt Lake...everything gets rusty!

Had the same exact thing happen to our 05 back a few months ago while working in Pennsylvania. Dodge knows of the problem but wouldn't do anything to help us. I didn't have but may e 5-6 thousand miles on the new setup.
I can't imagine what would of happened if that had failed while going down the highway with the gooseneck loaded down.

Usually very little stress while going down the road at speed.. Most breakage such as that happens at low speed while turning.

Seen that happen to a 2010 3500 and heard of a 4500 doing it also. Both happened while stopped and turning. Scary stuff.

Oh great....makes me feel just wonderful about my 2010 now....guess I need to call Thuren!

This is an issue that is happening alot with the 08.5+ upgraded steering kit

TRE failure for some reason

Did Thuren come out with a new steering kit yet? The old version required drilling out the knuckles......new kit was supposed to eliminate any drilling

I have had this same thing happen on 3 different trucks with the updated steering. All happened while turning going slow. Make sure you dont have any bad outer ujoints it amplifies the problem. One truck did have a 5th wheel on it and was just turning to go on to the freeway when it failed. Dodge did warranty the parts but this is extremely scary.

How many of you guys turn the wheel with out rolling?

Unless it's 100% necessary, I treat my steering like I don't have power steering.

Just this week, my Dad experienced breakage on the right side AT HIGHWAY SPEED !! PULLING A TRAILER.

He had been to the dealer earlier due to a recall and they said it was fine.

07' 2500 5.9. 2500. 147,000. He's lucky, we are lucky, and so is Chrysler. For now.
He said he heard/felt a bang then it was like he ran over something. He coasted to a driveway and pulled off to the right. Got out to find the ball joint busted. Scratched his head tying to figure out how the fukk he got it off the road.
We hauled it back here and fixed it with a NAPA arm, but I don't think we are done with Chrysler. Bull****. They looked at it, and said run it. We will investigate.
