Need tuning on new 8130 and 9860sts

Just picked up a new 8130 tractor as well as a 9860sts John Deere combine.

The combine is on the backburner, as it likely has enough power to chew the header itself to peices before it needs more...just wondering whats out there.


The 8130 on the other hand, is the smallest of that series (lowest horsepower rating)...This year was the first year they offered this HP with the same 3point lift power as the highest of the series. Our main concern was lift capacity and we gained it while saving a ton of money over the biggest tractor.

Now i did a little research on this before we made the purchase, but was shut down on a lot of questions. What ive learned is that the 8130 has the same motor as the bigboy (8530 i believe)....that its tuning (fuel) is different as well as the turbo having different vaines. Now I dont know anything of these vaines (variable or not)....and was wondering if tuning can control all we need to pump this thing up in the horsepower region, or is it unrealistic due to needing a new turbo?

Shouldn't need A new turbo. I'm pretty sure they are VVT. We've got an 8430 IVT, ILS and it does ok. Not a big fan of the IVT Tranny. Might look up TS Performance or Blixton. Nobody has a chip for the 9860 yet. We've had a 98 for 3 years and no one has one for it. We're running a 12 row and 35ft head. The Lexion 580R will do a little better than the Deere. On the 98 it is the same throat as a 9500! The old 9600 has more capacity through the throat.

Didnt know that about the throat....kind of disturbing. The 8130 is IVT (we have a 6320 for drain digging and love the IVT in that, and kind of thought everything might be phasing that direction, figured we would follow to make it easier for employees to only need to know how to drive one tranny type.

It also has the mfwd with the IFS.

with a VVT, does that mean they are all the same turbos throughout? Is it something in the tuning that controls the vaines or would it be an internal setup that would require the 85 internals?

I guess the only other differences that could possibly be there are fuel and tuning....sounds easy enough. I dont think itll be a tough job for this tractor anyways, the main goal is the corn planter (12 row stack fold) with starter fertilizer tanks. The old 4850 would pull it nice, but could barely keep the nose on the ground loaded, and struggled to lift it.
 
Same turbo on all the 8030's... yes tuning is the biggest difference... Nothing you can change.. unless your 8030 is new enough for the IMP.. basically adds 8-10%HP from your dealer..
The injectors are different... but you can't swap injectors.. each injector has its own program that is loaded into the ECU.. There are power boxes out there.. All I have seen are pressure boxes... Heard some rumors of other stuff out there.. but I haven't seen anything..

If you need a little more lift cap out of your 8130... look at the diameter of the 8530's... (Cat 4 hitch..)

If you think your 9860 has some HP.. haha... wait until you see the 9870's... (They peak about 514HP.. haha... )
 
When are the 9870's comin out. I'm bout ready to ditch the 9860. Next one will prolly be a 97 and a chip. No difference in the 96,97 or 9860's as far as cleaning wise. 98 just has more crap.

Our 8430 isn't that great on the grain cart. Sure it rides better over the rows with the ILS but the IVT sucks when you're loaded and need to haul A$$ to the truck to dump. Can't do it loaded(60k+). Our 8410 with a 20% chip on it does better at that.

There are a few demo machines out this fall... they have built 70.. 70 series machines... They will be out next year...

For the 70 Series there are more differances between the models, and of course more HP... I think the 9870 is up 65HP from the 60...
I'll try to post more info later...

More differances between the models... 95, 96,97,98... but not drastic.. on the 9760 and 9660, were basically the same machine.. except a little more HP... More HP for the 96,97, and 98's.. The 98's will get a 5 speed gear case for the header.. and a few minor changes to the thrashing unit....
Major electrical changes for all models.. (And Cab Controlls.) If you have used a 6030, they will have the Command Center like those tractors.. Harvest Monitoring will be done through this monitor. AMS will be done through the AMS monitor.. (Old Brown.. or 2600)

So what was the difference between the 9760 and 9860...other than the engine?

5spd gear case for the header?? What for on the header?

Sorry, not a Deere guy...just trying to learn a bit more about the other brands;)

Not a drastic differance between the 96,97, and 9860's... Yes, engine was the biggest differance... More differances in the 70 series.. but still nothing hugh as far as thrashing goes.

The 70's will get more HP.. but the is more HP for the 97 and 98, to seperate them from the 96... The 5 speed gear box is for the header speeds.(powershift for the header.. designed the same as the 8000 tractor transsmission... ) It is for different speeds for the header.. 97's and down will have the 2 speed we had on the 60's. The heavy gear case is because of the addition of the 12row corn head w/stalk chopper... (StalkMaster)

I'm surprised to see two 9860 owners on this forum.. not many of those machines out there...

Just traded in the 9750 for it...i havent even been back to see that yet.

Its overkill for us for sure...and probably expensive for the small gains...but oh well.

Aha...thanks for the explanation!

In this area, the JD dealer sells about 4 9860's/year...and trades in about 4/year. No thanks, I'll stick with Class 7 and smaller!

On the 9870, did they improve cleaning area? Why have the extra hp if it can't be put to the test. We run a 12 row and can't run it hard b/c it blows it out the back. They need more cleaning area. Dad think's next will be a 97 with a chip. Get the same power a a 98 with less cost.
 
Yes.. there are some minor changes.. but most of the changes applied to both the 97 and 98...
Personally I think the 98's are a little over kill, unless your pulling hills, or running mud.. especially rice...
I'll have to look up the numbers for the HP.. but I was thinking the 9870 was in the 470-480HP range.. if you pull it down 100rpms it goes to 514hp... I'll have to look up the 97 numbers...

a ecu reflash is available for more hp on 6125 engine (9860).
