47re problems, what part was this?

Also, I either purchase parts from PDD (BigBlue24) or PATC. PATC has good prices but you have to really work your way through their site to get what you need.
PDD has decent prices and a lot of knowledge to back it up. Will will usually work with you to get what you need for Parts.

so the original problem of that thrust washer wearing out and causing the rest to implode..was that builder f up or just normalness

To me it looks the thrust bearing had too many shims behind it, causing it to slip off the tabs. Once the thrust is spinning independently it tore tore up the shims, sending metal through the planetaries and intermediate shaft bushings galling everything up... I would say that the original builder should have just replaced the planetary instead of using so many shims.

The smoked direct clutches was caused by the second gear servo spring breaking and probably my shifter coming out of adjustment and shifting in between 1st and 2nd.

The original builder built this transmission probably 3-4 years ago, so I wouldn't say its a complete **** build. I am curious how he came up with $6k to rebuild this transmission though. $270 for a complete rebuild kit, $500 to have the converter rebuilt, $100 in bushing and bearings... So he wanted $5100 for labor?! No Thanks...

Transmission building is big profit if everything goes well. I did a build recently with all 3 billet shafts, a DPC reman Triple, and all of the other billet goodies in the pan and had about $3600 into it. That's buying all of the parts at full price. If you were setup with parts at wholesale cost I'm sure you could shave close to $1000 off of that total.
Now buy that same setup through a vender and it's close to a $6000 transmission. You certainly end up paying a premium for someones workmanship, experience and hopefully some warranty. It's worth it for some to know that they've got one of the best builders out there setting up their stuff. I certainly can't knock anyone for wanting to not do it them selves. But I do recommend that if you ever even though about doing it yourself, do it. It's very satisfying to know exactly what went into your trans!

Agreed, if I had more money I would just pay a good builder. Building my own truck/engine/trans is the only way I can get close to being able to afford racing.

Same here man, that's how I got into Tuning as well. It's nice to be able to take some pride in knowing that you've done most of it yourself.

I have a question about the pump gears, the set on the left (11 tooth) are what came out of my pump and the set on the right (10 tooth) are what come up in the book for a 47re.

Which do I need/work best?

Got the trans back in, everything seems good, but now it has a flare from 3rd to OD... any ideas? Only put about 5 miles on it though. I had to install a thinner thrust washer in the OD section by about .010" to get it in spec.

Maybe it needs to be tighter?

You may add the parts cost up and it seems like a lot, but I honestly don't see how so many shops can have performance diesel transmissions as the core of their business, and keep the lights on. Stock rebuilds are another story, however.

When I pulled it apart, this trans had a .213" thrust washer and an extra .010" shim behind that. I only changed the clutches and steels in the OD unit so I am thinking it needs that .023"...

Adding that shim will increase the 3-4 flare. Keep in mind that the center of the OD apply piston disengages the OD direct pack as the outer portion of that same piston is applying the OD braking clutches.

Look up CG transmissions or Muldoon diesel onlt two guys i would trust yes you can do it yourself but after pulling and putting the trans in a few times you can just work a extra day and pay for it these guys are good guys and also race so they know what it take to make them right

This is true however the sprag in the OD section will still be holding as the OD direct clutches are disengaged so you won't have a 3-4 flare.
This is not a manual vb correct? Are you sure you are not feeling the converter unlock right before the 3-4 shift and mistaking that for a shift flare?

It has a Goerend full manual VB.

I am going to try and pull the OD section today. I am starting to think I may have not lined up the little pins on the OD piston, and it is keeping the pack disengaged.
