What does the intake air sensor on a 12ver do (Other tan sense intake temp). Can it be tapped into and made to work a gauge also?

It tells the intake heaters when to turn on & off. Don't know about a gauge, it is probably a thermister type sensor. Don't know if a guy would be able to find a gauge that would match the resistance or voltage range.

So its probably an on/off switch rather than one that reads a wider spectrum?

I wonder if a trans gauge would work or if it has to have fluid contact to be accurate or to keep up with the rapid changes.

No, it has a variable range to it, depending on temp. But say it has a 13 ohm to 265 ohm range, is there a gauge out there that has a matching range?

kalder,
I see you are an ex-Chrysler Tech (I have a keen eye for the obvious). At what temp do the warmers come on at?

They come on ~66 degrees or lower. They are controlled by the PCM. The pre-heat cycle can last as long as 30 seconds- thats at 0 degrees. I think that must be a really vaugue number- I had mine come on for around 30 seconds on some 8-12 degree mornings.
