3406E exhaust manifold and turbo question

Holy crap it feels good to hear somebody else say that too! LOL

The funny thing is that all these people trying to run these junk S500s as singles on higher HP trucks could fix a few of their issues with swapping to a B manifold.

There are many higher HP single charger factory engines that use the square port on electronics from the factory.
 
I guarantee you it came from a previous turbo failure. People don’t like to fully disassemble the tubes/elbows and replace the air filter(s) which is what it takes to get rid of all the debris. Those pieces like to travel when a turbo unwraps!


Preach it! When you explain to guys that when a turbo explodes the boost pressure comes BACKWARDS and blows the chips into the filters it goes in one ear and out the other. Had one guy smoke 2 turbos in the same day because he only worried about the CAC.
 
For now he is keeping the 600 file and the 5232 trim codes. So stock cat files for a C16 but not stock for this engine.


As Chevota said, it’s the same turbo as stock. So if he likes stock power that will be fine however 98% of guys that want less than 800hp use the 0000 or acert twins. There are plenty of turbos that could work but they are either way more expensive or aren’t direct bolt on replacement.

Is the 0000 the "stage 1" borg?

Nevermind, looked it up. I really liked that turbo with the stock 2ws and just hot trim codes. I think that motor had a pre low nox file in it still, it ran really well for what it was. I know it hadn't been to a cat dealer since before 07.

Isn't the 177148 the same spec as a 7923? If it was me I'd get a stock manifold and put the "stage 1" on it if its making the power it should. I was getting 35-36 psi boost with a stock 550 turbo on a 2ws with just hot trim codes so I think you have some more issues. Have you done a boost leak check?

I think it is the same other then the 177148 has a smaller turbine housing. I am sure it would be a great turbo for the high pressure in a compund set up.

Its makeing good power. Walks circles around his previous truck with 550hp 1850ftlb.

I realy think the low boost came from the chewed up compressor wheel. He has not done a boost leak check. He needs another turbo for sure.

I would not be suprised if that was the case. When the new turbo goes on all the piping will be cleaned.
We have no clue what the previous owner did. It was a reman turbo that was on the truck.

You had the 14969880000 turbo?

He is leaning towards the 14969880000 turbo.

If he was not going for bolt on there are way better options. But they would also cost more and require a little bit of fab. He is not interested in that.

For lower HP maybe but the 171702 with 1.58 is making over 35psi on a 65psi total boost pull on a 1200hp 15.2L road truck. It’s being fed by a 3.9” HX-82 and has tried 1.32, 1.45, 1.58, 1.65 housings and has tried the 78 and 80mm compressor wheels. Along with several junk S500 variants that are always a disappointment.

Gated right the 177148 would be fast spooling for bottom end then let the big charger take over, After all the big charger is what dictate flow after its lit. Whatever it flows is the max you will see. The 171702 is good, cheap, easy to find turbo. As a matter of fact I have one in the basement in storage. Thinking about bolting to my 7.3 as the high pressure charger. Would need a 1.15 or smaller t4 to get it lit. Enough fuel would help.

You’re dreaming, that thing would be in the road on a 15L+ engine with any kind of fuel pushing it.

177148 and 171702 might use the same compressor but the cat cover flows better, the 177148 also has a smaller 92mm turbine with a gated 1.32, the 171702 has the 96mm turbine and comes standard with a 1.32.
 


I was unaware that a powerstroke was 15L, operated at the same RPM and remotely the same CFM of air flow as a class 8 truck engine.

A C16 on test stand at 660hp produces 3,849cfm of exhaust flow at 2,100rpm. A C18 at 685hp is 3,625cfm at 1,450rpm. At 2300rpm it’s 1,136hp and 5,499cfm. So the point is a 7.3L isn’t moving nearly the air as a 15L and to look for better performing exhaust manifolds only to stick a small turbine in the road is counter productive.

Yup. Thats why the 177148 spools so fast. I dont know if the factory gate could keep up on a heavy fuel situation? I still think I would make a good high pressure turbo on a compiund set up. As long as you gated it right.

Forgive me. I must have missed the point of the post I responded to. I thought you were saying a 7.3 could not spool the s475 as the high pressure in a compound set up.


Back to the 14.6L.. I think my brother is going to keep the stock manifold for while and just do the 14969880000 turbo. Then later on do the manifold. Will work better for the pocket book and he needs a turbo more then a manifold.

Or you could just size the turbos correctly and ditch the gate.
 
My brother ended up buying the B/W 14969880000.

Installed it today. We shall see how he likes it. Spool seems to be maybe a tad quicker. Hit 37 pounds of boost. That was all bobtail. So we shall see how it does with a load.
