5th gear??

So im drivin down the road and my 98 with a 4500 5sp and 5th gear went out just like you pushed in the clutch no grinding, clunks or anything all the other gears are working fine but no 5th?? im thinking they had a problem with the nut backing off?? Any ideas and could it be an easy fix?? Im gonna pull the pto cover off and take a peek maybe i can see something..

yes the nut fell off, take the tail housing off and fix it.

You should also quit lugging it in 5th gear.

They make alot of different design "up-date" nuts, none of which are 100% fixes but all are better than the factory nut. Use loctite and get it as tight as you can. Do NOT weld or tack weld the nut to the shaft unless you want to put in the good main shaft after you break that one!

ive got it back togather and fixed for now.. i put some green locktite on it its supposed to take heat to get it to break loose i guess we will see.

itll prolly still come off, but i bet it lasts a long while, that green lock tite is mean stuff

Drill the nut and put a set screw in it.
