I really never thought I would ask this, or even think this. What kind of fuel mileage can be attained from a 2wd IDI with and auto trans and 3.31 gears?

My usual solution is to do a cummins swap but it dont really fit in the application and the IDI is cheap, dirt cheap.

Buddy of mine put a 6.9 with a ZF5 speed in a 2x4 F150 "Flair Side". The rear axle is 3.08 (or something like that). He gets 25+ MPG regularly, and can get 31 MPG when doing mostly highway driving.

I used to get 18-19mpg with my '88 F350 Reg Cab 4x4 5spd, flatbed, 285/75/16's with 4.10's

C6 or E4OD? With 3.31s, you'll be high teens with a C6 most likely, I was able to get 17-18 with my old 85 F250 with 3.55s. E4OD would likely get low 20s, due to overdrive and lockup.

Also, turbo or naturally aspirated?

non turbo, unsure on trans. guy had a pair of idi trucks and a 51 f100 for sale. thought about dropping an idi in the 51 and driving it a little.

An IDI in a '51 F100 would be a really cool project and would also do very well on fuel, especially with an OD trans.

My current '89 F350 CC 7.3l N/A 4x4 5 spd. is getting 20 MPG With the pump turned down a bit and retarded timing
