power steering pump or booster?

on a 01 dirty max. a friend is having a problem... no power brakes or PS. fluid was very hot (enough to burn) and was overflowing from the resivor. how is one to tell if it is the brake booster or the PS pump. he says the PS pump would howl and shutter at idle. supposedly he went to stop the truck at a light and lost both brakes and PS at the same time.

if it is the PS pump, how hard is it to replace? is it a pain to get to and is there any suggestions before i dive into this for a friend?

if the power steering pump has a black resovoir it should have a recall on it there not bad to replace
