I h be a qui majestic on technicalities of operating on the dyno. I got into the diesel stuff 8 years ago and have always been told that you must be in a 1:1 gear and locked if you have an auto. Now I dyno'd my truck back in 2010 and got a measly 363hp and 924tq in 3rd gear(auto).

99goat ran on the dyno few weeks back and on his first pull he got 356hp and 685tq in 4th gear(manual). Then the dyno operator did two runs in 5th gear and pulled 417/425hp and 845/941tq.

To me this seems odd, and I know that the dyno isn't always accurate. Can someone clearify this?

4th gear is a 1:1 with the motor so I feel like that is more of reading to measure engine power.
5th gear loads the motor more so it puts more power down. If you want to know your peak hp during a 1/4 mile, wouldn't you want to use whatever gear puts the most power down??

4th gear may be a more consistent reading if you are tuning and making adjustments, idk
