hey all, im by far no mechanic but i like to do things on my own to learn how they work. I've got a 98 12v with a nv4500 500hp kevlar ceramic 13" disk, #10 plate, starwheel played with, and everything else is basically stock besides air filter and small things like that. I bought the truck with a hole in the exhaust and standard pipe coming out the rear. Drove the truck and beat the piss out of it for about a year before the tranny went out on me and i installed the current clutch. While doing that i installed a 8" stack, after getting everything back together i noticed the white smoke. I dont know how long its really been going on because of the hole, and i couldnt really see it all that well. but now it is defiantly noticeable. Piston rings are definatly shot right? With a high chance of cylinder walls being scorn? it burns about a quart every time i fill up. So here goes my noob questions. I know i'll have to have it machined but after all this is done i want to get into modifying my head. I've read that getting a performance cam will lower EGTs and build boost quicker. But is it really worth the coin on a truck that will most likely never see over 600hp? Is there any Rebuild kits yall would suggest for over sized pistons? I'd like to do head studs while i've got everything torn apart, but again forgive my lack of motor knowledge, would you still use the stock headgasket? The studs would just lock everything down tighter than head bolts right? What all should be done to the head while apart?

okay okay to many noob questions at once.. Heres the video.

I think you need to check a few other things before you go planning on a rebuild. Doesnt sound like the engine is hurt. Does it have alot of blow by or is it just leaking alot of oil. Several things could cause the white smoke, timing, leaking seal in your turbo, valve guide seals, etc.

Trucks got blow-by for sure. Not a ton but it is deffinatly constant when the cap is pulled. Also has a real loud whistle sound when the cap is pulled off.

Once again im no specialist but i had no idea a leaking seal in the turbo could be burning that much oil? The video cuts down a little of the quality, it looks a little worse in real life.

I would do a compression check before anything else. See if you can narrow it down to a specific cylinder(s) or if its even in the bottom end. It could be something like valve seals.

If you need to get parts, Snedge at Mumau Diesel is the guy to get them from

hell you shouldn't be worried about a rebuild yet, turbo seals could be out and leaking into the exhaust, valve stem seals, could be LOTS of things. does it leak any oil? doesn't sound like timing has slipped becasue it runs pretty smooth. using any antifreeze at all? we need a little more info

Yeah it burns a quart of oil about every gas fill up. Doesn't lose anti freeze.

have you taken the down pipe and intake tube off to inspect the turbo

No gsk, never messed with the timing so its probably slipped a ton.

Doubtful.

Yeah it burns a quart of oil about every gas fill up.

I would say you have some oil going somewhere. 1qt every ~400miles, 7.5qt every ~3000mi. That is significant.
Start looking at simple things like the turbo and start working from there. You would be pretty upset if you did a rebuild and it turned out to only be the turbo.

How many miles are on the truck?

When the engine is warm and idling, will the oil cap stay in place if you unscrew it and place it there, or does it dance around or blow off the fill tube?

I had a truck do the disappearing oil trick. Turbo was shot and leaking oil. The exhaust smell was horrible!

my HE351 has 40k miles on it and im losing oil out of it, not quite that significant, but its losin it

Doubtful.

10-4, i'll take a look at it.

Just rolled over to 220,000

yeah it'll stay, but it does make an awful whistling noise. with a little bit of white smoke coming from there.
