Cummins Dyno Disaster!

A big single?

Yes, for break-in it had an S400 based single 88mm charger with a 1.15 T6 96/88 hotside. They took it to about 1k HP fuel only, then gave it a little bit of nitrous. The goal was 1400 HP, then pull it off the dyno and do some street tuning/runs, then bolt-on the triples and shoot for 2K.
 
I hear ya, but didn't it make like 1000hp on that pull?

These were break-in pulls, the blowby was still going down with each pull, timing was still mid 20 degrees, etc. It made 1260 before it let go on that pull, the prior run did just over 1300 HP. This run was hopefully gonna hit 1350 to 1400 then pack it up and call it a night.

That I don't know.
What I do know is it made a pile of junk out of a lot of cool parts, and flushed a ton of money.
Believe me, I like the guys at PDD, they are not hacks, and I'm not judging.

But, in this instance, the whole engine combination was carefully selected with a goal for streetable 2K HP and this unfortunate setback came early in the quest.

The biggest expenses were the destroyed block, head, and electronics. Hamilton offered to fix and/or replace the head but out of respect for D&J, Josh decided to send the head back to Drew to salvage the valves, springs, intake runner, etc. and pay to build another head.


For the rest of the story, you'd have to talk directly with Josh or Zach :stab:

I'm just waiting for all the "well it's Chinese junk" people, acting like Cummins doesn't use Chinese manufacturing for OEM parts.

Watching their YT videos seems like they are only learning from explosions, or maybe nothing from those either.
 
I keep seeing that same sentiment on social media.

Is it still a quest for 2000hp if you pass-go and go directly to the 2000hp capable engine?

So I'm intrigued now. Zack made a fairly brazing post on Instagram that looked like a response to being called in to question by Drew @ DJ precision.
I *think Zack was alluding to a snap ring kicking out or being gone from the wrist pin, along with outright condemning using a feeler Guage to check ptw.

The limited photographs I've seen don't lead me to believe that it was a wrist pin failure. There are also references to the vertical streaking in the adjacent cylinder.
I don't feel like that is terribly conclusive, but only because I know lube was interrupted to that piston jet well before the engine spun down.

I guess I'm just curious more than anything.

I dont follow hamilton too closely, i run one of their cams and thats about it, but isnt this the block thats supposedly good to 3k hp? Are they taking any of the blame on this or not?

Blame? For a performance application ? I don't understand that at all. I don't know how you can blame a block for a piston failure.

If I understand the explanation in the information posted, the crankshaft is in another engine?

I will say that I don't know what actually caused the explosion, but it damn near had to be something that moves.

I don't expect them to give him a new block for nothing. Just wondering if they are putting it off on joshs assembly or a casting failure. All i have to go on was the video pdd posted and whats been in this thread. Not sure on the crank being in another engine already. Maybe josh had a back up stock block he through together?

Well I finally got a chance to watch the video and wow, they do not have a clue what failure analysis is. The first thing they did was break rule #1: No preconceived ideas! During an analysis, at no point should any sentences begin with “well I think....”. Everything must be based on facts, and facts are gathered from what you SEE.
The solution to all of this is very simple; perform a real failure analysis.
#1) Properly clean and organize all of the engine’s parts/pieces
#2) Go buy a good eye loupe set and find the failure initialization site. This is probably the most important step as it will answer many questions at the same time. There are many different types of cracks and each one is caused by very specific conditions the part saw at the time of failure. Was it a brittle fracture? Was it a fatigue crack? Do you see any beach marks, ratchet marks, chevrons? Was there an inclusion?
#3) Obviously I’ve greatly shortened the details on this procedure, but you get the idea. After ALL of the facts are gathered, you will be able to identify the root cause of the failure with absolution and ZERO opinions will be involved.

What is wrong with you.? Do you think it makes you look smart? Everybody with half a brain knows that speculation is the only way to stir up a debate.
