C-13 single turbo kit

Whose all done the conversion to a single turbo? What year of manifold can I use to work with a single S400 series? (S478 TO BE EXACT) I know our claas 750tt has a single turbo c13. Trying to source everything ourselves and will most likely build a few of them for our Petes. I know bullydog has tuning and manifolds, but I figured I'd try to source hard parts from ag equipment or pre compound turbos.

Why change it? The two that are there build boost across a wider rpm range.

Run the coolant for the aftercooler through its own circuit.

Compounds aren't the biggest issue on a C13. Deal with the IVAs and you will be much happier.

There is a single turbo c13 that exists. Oil lines and other misc items can be sourced from that.

Have you or anybody else tinkered with the ECM yet?

I would like to see the sales pitch from the guys pushing the conversion. They all claim fuel mileage but all the C15's we've done for people never gained crap. You tell them why it's a bad idea and they insist on doing them, then complain they have a narrow power band after.

I think it is because people do not realize what it is in the single turbo kits that make their engine better. It isn't the turbo but the programming that tends to help the acerts live longer. Since you do both when you go to a single turbo the owners typically thinks "hey that single turbo is great it eliminated a lot of the problems I was having". Not realizing what he really did to eliminate the problems.

I've had a few calls this month with guys that own 3406E asking if they can put acert turbos on them believe it or not...

We do that a lot, friend had a set on a 3406B. Some 2WS's with them. They run awesome.

Most just don't understand the airflow that the big chargers provide that would be useless as a single, for the C13 the big turbo is a GT50, just happens to be the same size as what comes factory as a single on the C16s, and we know how the GT55s do as singles.

The wheels in the low pressure on the C15s are massive. The secondary isn't a slouch by any means. GTA42 based. The rotating assembly is freakin stout.

I have 20 sets of each in my core bank and can honestly say none are trashed. Some my have a bad turbine from eating a valve or two given the C13 track record but none are in pieces like that garbage garrett came up with for the C15 single turbo apps.

This gives the OP an idea of what we are talking about. These are C15 wheels mind you.

On the left is a compressor out of a C15 Low pressure compound setup, the right is the compressor out of the single turbo app.

The turbine out of the C15 low pressure turbo..... yeah it flows a tad bit of exhaust.

The only thing I can nit pick about the compound turbos on these cats are the iron compressor housings. That low pressure on the c15 is a load to man handle on the bench LOL

Shove one of those bad boys on one leg and with one hand while starting a fastener to hold it.

We have had countless issues with our C-13 and are debating the single turbo swap. We have blown precoolers and turbos. Everyone seems to like them but this thread has me thinking. What are the cons of the single turbo kit because right now the simplicity and deletion of the precooler makes me think it would be a great update.

Cost of swap and loss of performance.

The cost of replacing factory turbos or the precooler every 50-75k is not exactly appealing to me. As far as performance loss I find it hard to believe that a single on a c-13 would be any worse off than all of our single turbo c-12 powered trucks

Edit: We are not doing this for fun. The truck needs attention and this is not the first time it has had issues
