dt466 swap Qs????

I have an allison 1000 bolted to it now. Just need to find a controller to shift it. ATS is suppose to have one soon. But they've had one "coming soon" for quite a while. We'll see.

Is the power potential really worth all the extra work/weight over a 5.9?? Serious question not being a smart ass.

That's what I'm trying to find out. Especially in the sense of "useable" power. I'd also like to see if there are ways to lighten it up.

I didn't do this project because it was easy, but because nobody else had. I think the cummins weighs something like 1100lbs. and the dt466 weighs 1400lbs. I don't see 300lbs as a huge difference, but others might. As far as power potential, I should be able to run mucho power and still be able to pull whatever I want with no issues. But alot of that will come down to tuning.

As far as controlling it, I've learned that Fleece Performance uses a duramax computer with their own harness and tps and uses EFI Live to tune the computer to work stand alone style. Powertrain Control Solutions kind of looked into making a stand alone system, but never did work the bugs out. PCS origionally provided the system for Extreme4x4's Suburban Gorilla, but they never could get it to shift right. Fleece Performance now has their setup in the truck and it has no issues.

I'm putting one in a Super Duty, and must say that the 466 will fit in the SD better than the 97 & older. I'm still working on getting the engine, it's hard with 4 kids.
Along the lines of power, the ones with a P-pump(93-95) can use all the same go fast goodies a 12V Cummins can. There's even a couple places that have EDM injectors, reground cams, & exotic performance stuff. One sled puller guy told me that the DT466-P can spin to about 4500 without rod bolts or any other internal mods. If you dont want to hack up your firewall, try a DT360. They are more stout than a 12V Cummins, and much cheaper to buy. I think they are about an inch taller & an inch longer than the 5.9 Cummins. Powersnorter's truck, if it's that black one, isnt even the p-pumped 466, and he's making some wild power. Is this his?

The hp potential of the DT is night and day over the 5.9. A properly tuned DT will do around 1k more hp than any 5.9 at this time.
BTW Frank's truck does have a P pump on it, And its a few more cubes than 466!!!

Oh, didnt know it was P-pumped. Originally, that series of 466 had the A pump. I couldnt see his pump. There's still hope for the A-pump, for those of you with that pump.

Have any of you guys played with the rotary pump early DT466's? I found a 86 model and have plans to drop it in a chevy. I am currently looking for a p-pump for it though.

I am not sure if I remember correctly, but I believe you can use the DT530 Pistons and liners in a 466 to gain a few cubes. It's been a few years since I played with a cornbinder. Jeremy.

I have a quick, kinda off topic question.... I used to have a 12 valve and I could turn up the pre-boost fueling starwheel to get it to smoke more (as everybody already knows).... Now, I've got a Dt466 in a dump truck at work and the other day, a mechanic and I were gonna try and turn it up, startin with the starwheel before we cracked open the AFC housing..... now, by lookin at the pump, it looks to be a P-pump and I could almost swear its a 96 model truck, but when I cranked the wheel up to see if we could get it to smoke, I couldn't get it to do anything...... and I turned it maybe 30 clicks...... no IIRC on my 12v, I turned it about 20 clicks and it smoked just idling a tiny bit...... are the P pumps in the dt's not as finicky as the 12v pumps are or what?? just a question that I"m curious about, b/c we were gonna break open the AFC housing if it worked (turning up the pre-boost fueling) and see if we could crank somemore power outta my truck. Thanks for any insight.

Not too off topic. Your dump truck has the P-pump in it. You wont notice very much with just the star wheel adjustment. Go in there and slide the plate. While you're in there, you can tighten the gov springs 3 clicks each. The same pump mods for a Dodge/Cummins will work on yours. My old work truck is a 94 DT466, and I put in a 0 plate(it's actually the very one in my avatar), tightened the gov springs, advanced the timing, adjusted the star wheel a little(to keep smoke reasonable), and str8 piped it. Here's a vid of it:

Keep in mind it weighs 27k in the vid.

with only being 22 cubes more than a ford powerstroke will it really be any easier to squeeze hp out of it?

Thanks for your help.... I"m at work right now so I can't watch the vid but I'll check it out tonight, if its alright, I may PM you with some more questions at the beginning of the week if that's ok, as not to get this thread off track of the original topic.

I think so, it's an I6 and has a ton more displacement per cylinder.

My brotherinlaw is pulling a 1066 in the pro farm class i think, anyway he's got somewhere in th neighbor hood of 630 cubes. never been on a dyno, but it runs like a raped ape. he had Scheid diesel set up the pump and its a p pump.
