Build around your safety first What CR said and hughes. Worry about yourself before you put yourself into a machine running quick times.

Look at your gearing too, view weight shedding as the most cost effective 'power improver' since dropping weight is similar to increasing horsepower. The faster you want to travel the more hp&tq is required.

Aerodynamic drag, your tire contact patch size and your tire pressures will effect your acceleration too not to mention your weight transfer as well. Remember that you aren't only racing someone, your are also hoping for the proper amount of traction to beat them. Too much and/or too sticky of a tire, you will slow down.
 
Gutting the bed took alot of weight off of my 94. I took a good bit of weight out of the frame, but added some back by bracing it.
Here's how it looked. Not pretty, but I wasn't going for looks.
