Diesel / CNG discuss

Well I feed my low pressure regulator 275PSIG. It doesn't flow any gas unless their is a negative pressure placed upon it. As that vacuum is increased it releases gas to bring it back to that original setting. Basically the ideal setting is to have the low pressure regulator not flowing any gas while the motor is sitting idle at a stop light. Once you mash on the go pedal that's when or where you would want it to start flowing gas. I see no need to try or want to burn any CNG with out trying to move my truck down the road. I think it would be a waste of CNG for it to be used for anything other than moving forward down the road.

Yes, sounds like a standard vacuum regulator. I guess you saying it was set at negative pressure threw me off. Also, why are you running three regs? You can get a high pressure to cut it down to 150 or so.

I get a stable supply to the low pressure regulator with out deviation from a single high pressure regulator. With the old meco regs they will very their output based on the tank pressure, so by adding the second high pressure I get a constant 275 PSIG to the low pressure regulator unless my tank pressure drops below that pressure. It makes it easier to tweak the regulator's output.

How much CNG are you burning compared to Diesel typical. I understand more load more CNG but you said you went 1300 miles and burned 13/16th of a tank. How much CNG did you burn.

I know very little about CNG but I understand the concept. I built a turbo 4-stroke sled that ran of Lp and my old 7.3 ran on WVO so I'm not complete new to different fuel systems

Also how big of tanks in the truck do you run?
Any good websites to read up on this stuff?

You have peeked my interest.

Thanks
Mike

I normally run 2 tanks in the bed of my truck that hold 18 GGE of CNG. When I did that trip to Texas I had a 3rd tank installed that held as additional 10 GGE of CNG. With the 2 tanks I can generally get 450 miles before they run out. That is burning up 1/2 of a tank of diesel. That is driving to work, groceries, beer, ect... On the highway it is naturally much better fuel mileage when you can set the cruse and just roll on down the road.

I am shooting for a 50/50 mix to me that seems to be about the right mix to net the best of both worlds. That is my opinion though.

Sounds about right. That LBZ is pushing over 50mpg hwy, 35ish around town and daily driving.

I was considering CNG conversion on my truck, but I would do the digital controller to run 90%+ CNG and that setup would run me $3g without the tank! Now that gas is down to CNG prices I'll keep driving the beater car.

I need to get myself one of those beater cars haha instead of just my truck. I just cant see my self driving around in a civic or something like that. Maybe a beater truck though :hehe:

Yep, I just can't see beating down the highway in my "nice" truck all week (60mi round trip).

Get to that point in life, where you don't give a rats azz, you'll get a civic LOL

search- why does propane make a engine go boom? timing, the problem with propane or cng is you are adding an UNTIMED fuel, read the thread, don't be scared hommie

1 Tank of diesel at 3.29 gallon + CNG at 2.00 gallon. Diesel = 105.28 + CNG= 72.00 so 175.00 is about what it would cost me to go 1000 miles currently. I have yet to do a long road trip with my EFILIVE mostly been short trips so far. I think I can do a lot better than that on the road for a decent trip over 250 miles or so.

I drive my crew truck to my house most every day thats the reason I havent got that beater car. If that changes I will be looking into that civic. :hehe:

Sounds like you're the one scared?

Do you know how long people have been supplementing their diesel vehicles? If you inject mass amounts of CNG where it is rich enough to ignite under only compression, maybe you'll have issues but I doubt it. Thing is, CNG has a very narrow AFR window to where it will ignite. The fuel is "timed" to whenever we decide to inject the diesel.

And what does propane have to do with this? And what was the instance where you had trouble blowing something up?

I have over 60K miles of CNG use on my truck I am certainly not scared of mine going boom. Well maybe the head gasket, oh yea been their to and that only scared my wallet.

What's the point then? A truck getting 19 mpg is going to burn 53 gallons of diesel in a 1000 miles which is $173 in fuel. That's cheaper then the combination even before all the tanks and plumbing. Or am I missing something?
