it's scary what can be found in an ECM

You have the cummins and dmax markets locked up. However, On a gasser platform, does the read blocker work if another manufacture tries to read the ecm, or is it just a bit you flip to prevent other efilive programmers from reading the data?
The block is actually determined by the ECM type. For the Cummins and Bosch based Duramax ECM's we can stop just reading, yet allow them to be reflashed, this is the ideal situation (as far as locking goes).
For nearly all the gassers and LB7 & LLY, the lock prevents everything, reading and flashing (including dealer updates), there is no back doors. Again, this is because of the architecture of the ECM it has to work that way.
The lock we are talking about is done to the ECM, not the tuning file.
I've seen first hand in the gasser tuning world, unlocked tunes are usually used for forum hero ammo, not learning, so I totally understand why tuners want the feature.

So you've read tune files from box tuners but now you lock someones ecm so your stuff cant be read? I don't lock anything, if a person pays me for what they get, it's their property!

Actually, it's YOUR intellectual property. If you want to give it our freely, that's your choice. If you think I haven't been sent other folks tunes that were left unlocked because the owner wasn't happy, you'd be wrong.

And you're damn right we've read out the box tuners. Most of us have asked for years what the hell was going on and why. You know what the response was?....NOTHING....silence....unanswered questions.

Seems like over the last year, that has changed quite a bit.....and it's all been for the better because there is no more hiding behind a vail of ignored questions and non-response.

What did this ENTIRE topic stem from? A guy bought a truck, thought it might have a tune on it and in fact it did.....a very crude one.

Again, you're asking for speculation on someone else's intent.

If you want to know why on that question, the person to ask is the person that designed the calibration.

It's like locking the ECM on the current Duramax. Chevy has always been one of the ones that almost expected their stuff to be hotrodded, but now you can't read out that particular ECM. But, you can already read out the ECM's on the new Camaro's....why? Can't tell ya, I wasn't there when they made their decisions.

I would imagine the OEM's are getting tired of warranty claims entirely due to some piece of chit box tune blowing out head gaskets or melting pistons. I don't blame them a bit for locking them down tighter than a nuns ****.

The EPA could be imposing influence to the OEM's to make it harder and harder for a tuner to mess with the calibration.

As to tuners being able to lock their tunes of course! Why would they put hours and hours into a tune only to have it *****d around. Props to those tuners that will help those that want to learn....the little I looked through the efi forum there are not a lot out there giving it up.

OH yeah forgot..... to those crying and *****ing about about the threads on CompD and all they have in their sig is a filter and a tuner and never actually contribute.......Are you kidding me?????

Why don't you leave these answer to the efilive folks rich.

Because again, were the EFILive folks sitting at the table when the decisions were made for this ECM or calibration? No.

You're asking for an answer to a question that can't be answer be the folks here.

If you're at home and you decide to have Cheerios for breakfast, if someone calls me and goes, "Why the heck did Jason have Cheerios this morning?", all that can be answered is....ask the guy that made the decision.

Wow. dude. stfu. Please.

lemme start over.

Topic #1. Its ok to exploit oem tunes, but locking your own? pot kettle black. If you think your hard work is any more then Chrysler, you're an idiot. There's no debate there.

#1b. meh, I'll be the pot, gimmie a better tune. lol

#2. Theres a locking feature.... Did the oem's use this on every ecm? if so efilive, smarty, they all brute forced it some how initially. Im curious if that was the case.

2b, Im sure efilive folks have connections and know why one way or another.

Wow. dude. stfu. Please.

Probably not gonna happen.

How about YOU not **** up another thread with dumb ****.

Same dumb crap you rant about in the friggin SSR threads.

You'd be the guy that I'd lock the ECM on and here's why....

I've seen first hand in the gasser tuning world, unlocked tunes are usually used for forum hero ammo, not learning, so I totally understand why tuners want the feature.

Eh. you've done a fine job with this one. ;)

My questions are legit. I try to keep the horse blinders off.

If you didn't try to answer questions directed at someone else...

SSR threads.... you forget and proved it your self... i was right. Ty's truck is a perfect example.

w00t!

And you have no idea what was done or why.....

I can't wait to see what you blow up when the 03 - 05 calibrations are available.

Ahhhh, insightful words from Czerak.

Always enlightening.

Ross will be the first to tell ya, he's not the tuner. He's not going to tell you that X degrees of timing or X uS of duration or X PSI of pressure is the way to go.

What you're going to find out is that your random number punching that you've been able to do with SSR has only prevented you from blowing up your truck because of the OEM limiters in the ECM.....AS WE'VE DISCUSSED IN THIS THREAD. Some of us have seen the SSR tables, so question what you like.

I'm interested if you keep the ECM from transmitting CAN data? In theory even though you could not read the tables you could still log the outputs and recreate the tune fairly easy.
